Pale cherry blossoms drifted down in endless soft showers,

carrying faint, delicate perfume across the woodland lane,

while spring sunlight filtered through the interlaced boughs.

I wandered along this familiar forest path,

where wild violet sprouted beneath mossy stones,

and my footsteps slowed beside the weathered wooden bench.

A young man sat motionless upon the planked seat,

clutching a crumpled silk ribbon between his fingers,

the hue matching the scarf she used to wear.

He did not gaze at the swirling petals with delight,

his sight fixed on the vacant space beside him,

replaying every gentle word exchanged in former springs.

He noticed my hesitant step nearby,

and turned toward me with eyes heavy with sorrow.

He told me they once came here every April,

vowing to witness the cherry bloom together each year,

to walk this lane until their hair turned silver.

She suffered from a lingering, cruel illness,

which stole her strength little by little,

and finally took her away before last spring arrived.

They had already picked this very bench,

planning to bring homemade berry tea,

and stay till dusk amid the falling blossoms.

Now he comes alone when cherry trees flower,

not with hope of reunion, but to keep their old appointment.

He knows she will never step onto this path again,

yet the grove still breathes the same tender spring fragrance

they once savored side by side.

A mild gust stirred the canopy overhead,

sending a flurry of pale petals swirling to the ground,

landing lightly on the empty spot beside him.

He brushed away the blossoms with trembling hands,

and whispered a quiet greeting only the wind could hear.

He said true love does not end when life departs.

It lingers in seasonal blooms,

waiting silently for the one who still remembers.

I continued down the blossom-lined trail,

as petals kept falling, soft and unceasing.

Some partings are forever and cannot be mended.

They hide inside the recurring spring,

and awaken whenever the cherry flowers descend.
