Komodo dragons, the world’s largest living lizards,
inhabit a small cluster of volcanic islands in eastern Indonesia.
These giant reptiles can grow up to three meters long,
and their powerful jaws carry sharp, serrated teeth
for tearing apart the flesh of wild prey.
For decades, scientists believed their bite delivered deadly bacteria,
but new research proves their mouth glands produce a mild venom
to weaken large animals after a single bite.
Komodo dragons rely on a keen sense of smell
to track deer, wild boar and other prey across many kilometers.
They are ambush hunters,
lying quietly among dry shrubs and rocks
and waiting patiently for unsuspecting animals to pass by.
Adult Komodo dragons have few natural enemies,
yet their wild population faces steady pressure
from habitat loss and human disturbance.
Local conservation authorities set up protected zones
to limit human activity and keep the fragile island ecosystem balanced.
Tourism brings income to island communities,
but it must be managed carefully
to avoid disrupting the natural behavior of these rare lizards.
