The soft glow of sunset spilled over the surface of the quiet lake,
painting ripples with pale orange and rose,
while reeds swayed slowly along the muddy bank.
I wandered along the narrow path beside the water,
slowing my pace to breathe in the cool air
carrying the faint scent of water plants.
A man sat alone on a smooth grey stone,
his fishing rod resting loosely in his hand,
the line hanging idle above the still water.
He did not watch the float closely,
his gaze drifting far across the wide lake,
toward the faint outline of hills on the opposite shore.
He noticed my slow passing,
and gave a quiet nod of greeting.
He told me he came to this lake every evening,
not for fish, but for the sunset.
Decades before,
he and his wife would come here together.
They would sit right on this stone,
watching the day fade gently into night.
She loved the way the sunlight melted on the lake,
and said the twilight here felt like a quiet promise.
After she was gone,
he kept coming back.
He no longer expected to share words with her,
yet the lake still held the light she once admired.
Sometimes a light breeze stirred the water,
and for a brief moment,
he could almost feel her sitting beside him again.
A flock of wild birds rose from the reeds,
flying in a loose line across the glowing sky.
The orange light faded little by little,
turning into soft purple and grey.
He wound up his fishing line slowly,
ready to head home as dusk settled down.
He said happiness does not always stay beside us.
It sinks into places we once loved,
waiting for us to return and meet it again.
I continued down the lakeside path,
as the last ray of sun vanished behind the hills.
The lake remained calm and wide.
Some love does not fade away,
it hides itself inside the quiet beauty of the world.
