The evening breeze swept across the old railway platform,

carrying the faint smell of coal smoke and dry grass

from the distant fields.

I waited beside the faded wooden bench,

watching passengers drag their luggage,

each wrapped in their own quiet thoughts.

An elderly woman stood a few steps away,

clutching a folded wool scarf in her hands.

Her eyes fixed on the empty track,

as if she was waiting for a train

that would never arrive again.

She noticed my glance,

and offered a soft smile,

beginning her story without my asking.

She came here every autumn evening,

to stand right on this spot.

Many years ago,

her husband left from this platform,

heading off to work in a faraway city.

He promised to come back before the first frost,

and wrap this wool scarf around her shoulders.

But life took an unexpected turn.

He never returned.

At first she came here hoping to greet him.

As decades slipped by,

her visits changed.

She no longer expected to see his figure

stepping down from the carriage.

She only came to feel the same evening wind,

the wind that brushed his face

on the day he left.

A whistle echoed in the distance.

A modern train pulled slowly into the station,

its bright lights cutting through the dusk.

The crowd stirred and hurried forward.

She stepped back gently,

making space for rushing travellers.

She told me she would leave soon.

Memories do not need trains to carry them home.

They stay in the wind,

in the quiet of this worn platform.

When the doors slid shut and the train rolled away,

the platform fell back into soft stillness.

I understood then.

Some farewells are not spoken in words.

They linger in familiar places,

held gently by the wind across the years.
