Soft twilight seeped through the frosted windowpanes,

blurring the streetlamp glow beyond the glass,

while cool night air slipped in through the ajar door.

I stepped into this familiar little café,

the faint aroma of roasted coffee wrapping around me,

and my eyes drifted to the corner table by the wall.

A young man sat alone beside the window,

two ceramic mugs resting on the wooden surface,

one untouched and growing cold.

He did not scroll through his phone in distraction,

his sight fixed on the empty seat across from him,

replaying quiet conversations once shared here.

He noticed my slow pause nearby,

and lifted his head with a weary, faint smile.

He told me they had chosen this café long before,

promising to meet here at dusk each autumn,

to watch the streetlights kindle one by one.

They once planned trivial futures together,

talking of small journeys and quiet evenings,

believing their bond could outlast every change.

But distance and silent disagreements came at last,

and they parted without fierce quarrels,

only gentle resignation heavy in their words.

He still came here on this agreed date,

not hoping for reunion, but to honor the old promise.

He no longer expected her figure to cross the doorway,

yet the café still held the same warm amber lamplight

they once admired side by side.

A light breeze stirred the linen curtains,

carrying fallen maple leaves past the window,

as the clock ticked steadily through the fading hour.

He reached out and touched the cold mug gently,

then exhaled and gathered his belongings slowly.

He said some love does not end in rage or blame.

It fades softly,

leaving only faint traces in the places once cherished.

I turned and walked out onto the sidewalk,

as the last gleam of sunset dissolved in the sky.

Some farewells need no loud declaration.

They settle in quiet corners,

lingering in the spaces where two souls once belonged.
