Coral reefs, often called rainforests of the sea,
are complex underwater structures built by tiny coral polyps.
These minuscule living creatures secrete hard calcium carbonate,
which slowly piles up over thousands of years
to form vast, rocky frameworks beneath the ocean waves.
Though coral reefs occupy less than one percent
of the total ocean floor,
they shelter nearly a quarter of all known marine species.
Countless fish, crustaceans and mollusks
find food, hiding places and breeding grounds
within the winding channels of the reef system.
Corals maintain a close partnership with microscopic algae
that live inside their soft tissue.
The algae capture sunlight and produce nutrients
to feed the coral hosts,
while corals supply the algae with safe living space.
This delicate balance can easily break down
when seawater grows warmer than normal.
Rising ocean temperatures force corals to expel their algae,
and the reefs turn pale white in a process known as coral bleaching.
Without the algae, corals lose their main food source,
and large reef areas will slowly die
if high water temperatures last for a long time.
Pollution, overfishing and coastal construction
also add heavy pressure to these fragile marine habitats.
Scientists and marine protectors keep monitoring reef health
and testing practical ways
to help coral ecosystems recover from damage.

Though coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the total ocean floor,
they shelter nearly a quarter of all known marine species.
主干:
they shelter nearly a quarter of all known marine species
Though coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the total ocean floor
Corals maintain a close partnership
with microscopic algae that live inside their soft tissue.
主干:
Corals maintain a close partnership with microscopic algae
that live inside their soft tissue
