Grey evening tide crept slowly over the damp sand,

hushing the faint clink of mooring chains,

while cold sea wind carried the tang of salt and rain.

I trod along the splintered wooden planks of the pier,

where rusted iron posts stood half eaten by brine,

and my pace halted beside a weathered metal bench.

A young man sat alone, staring out toward the open sea,

holding a frayed wool scarf folded in his palms,

the very one she used to wrap around her neck on windy nights.

He did not watch the rolling waves with any longing for voyage,

his gaze fixed on the empty stretch of shoreline,

replaying the final quiet conversation they shared here.

He noticed my slow stop behind him,

and lifted his face with eyes dimmed by grief.

He told me they would come to this pier at dusk,

whenever the tide rose and the wind turned mild,

dreaming of small trips across the quiet bay.

She suffered from a progressive heart ailment,

which eroded her strength day after day,

and took her away before they could book their boat trip.

They had marked this exact bench as their spot,

planning to bring thermoses of warm spiced tea,

and watch the dusk bleed into indigo above the waves.

Now he returns as dusk falls,

not in hope of seeing her, but to keep their old promise.

He knows her footsteps will never sound on this pier again,

yet the ocean still breathes the same cool salty breeze

they once breathed side by side.

A heavy gust swept across the water,

scattering fine sea spray onto the wooden planks,

settling lightly on the empty space beside him.

He smoothed the folds of the scarf with sluggish fingers,

and whispered a soft farewell only the tide could hear.

He said love does not vanish once a life is lost.

It dwells inside the rise and fall of tides,

awaiting anyone who still chooses to remember.

I walked back along the creaking pier,

as waves kept rolling in, slow and unrelenting.

Some goodbyes are absolute and irreversible.

They sink beneath the grey evening tide,

and stir whenever the sea wind revisits the shore.
