Soft golden afternoon light slants

through the wooden window of the old rural kitchen.

Thin dust drifts slowly in the silent air,

and the whole old house is wrapped in a

quiet coldness that never existed before.

I dragged my weary strides back to my

hometown after a year of toil in the city.

The country lane remains rutted and familiar,

wild grasses run rampant on both sides as they have for years,

yet the figure who once lingered at the village entrance,

watching for my return, has vanished forever.

I push open the rusted timber door of the ancestral cottage.

The creak of the hinge reverberates across the vacant yard,

raw and desolate.

I step into the old kitchen where my childhood was rooted.

The earthen stove, which breathed smoke for decades,

stands solemn in the corner.

The firewood rack against the wall lies empty, coated in fine dust.

No flame flickers within, no curling smoke ascends the brick chimney.

My fingertips brush the weathered clay surface of the stove.

Scene after scene unfolds before my eyes.

Year upon year, my mother would crouch right here,

her frame bent, feeding firewood, fanning the embers,

brewing simple farmhouse meals to sustain me through every passing season.

In those days, I journeyed afar to toil within the bustling metropolis.

I laboured amid endless trivialities,

adrift amid the fickle warmth of the alien city.

No matter how late I returned home on holidays,

no matter how bitter the winter gale cut through the night,

once I crossed the threshold of this kitchen,

steaming rice and dishes would await my weary frame.

Mother would linger beside the stove,

warming her palms over glowing embers.

She never uttered grand rhetoric,

only whispered gentle admonitions:

eat well, keep warm, do not exhaust yourself out in the world.

Back then, I was young and presumptuous,

convinced time stretched endlessly ahead.

I believed mother would abide eternally within this cottage,

guarding this stove, guarding this home,

awaiting my homecoming year after year.

I never grasped the fragility of mortal life,

the inevitability of impermanence.

I recall the last winter before her departure.

Her health waned day by day,

yet she still insisted on shuffling to the stove,

attempting to light fire for me, as she had always done.

I pleaded with her to rest,

but she smiled faintly and shook her head.

She said she still wanted to prepare a bowl of hot food,

so I would have warmth to carry with me when I left again for the city.

Her voice grew weaker as spring came.

The illness stole her strength little by little,

until one quiet dawn, she slipped away without farewell.

Now I am home once more.

The kitchen remains as it was in my youth;

the stove stands unchanged,

the wooden window stays in place,

tables and benches all retain their old positions.

Everything remains, save the soul who loved me most deeply.

The hearth is cold, the fire extinguished.

The chimney yields no more wispy smoke.

No one shall leave a lamp burning for my late arrival;

no one shall prepare hot meals for my wandering soul.

The afternoon sun still pours soft radiance over the empty kitchen.

The room is so hushed I can hear dust settling.

I stand solitary in this space saturated with memories,

and for a fleeting moment, I behold her gaunt silhouette,

moving amid swirling smoke.

Tears well up unbidden and stream down my cheeks,

I cannot hold them back.

She spent her entire humble life within this small rural kitchen,

upholding all my wandering years with quiet,

unassuming warmth.

I finally come to understand:

the most precious treasure in mortal life is never worldly opulence.

It is the old cottage crowned with curling smoke,

and a mother who waits faithfully for your return.

Certain partings are irrevocable, eternal farewells.

After mother departed,

all the clamour of the world feels distant and hollow.

A chasm opened deep within my heart,

one that no other presence can ever fill or thaw.

The cottage endures, the old kitchen remains.

Yet for the rest of my life,

no one will light that smoke of home,

no one will wait for me to return.

I linger for a long while, tracing every familiar corner.

At last, I turn and walk out of the kitchen.

I close the wooden door gently behind me.

The latch clicks softly.

I step onto the country road once more,

heading back to the city.

I carry an everlasting longing locked inside my chest,

and know I shall never again hear her voice calling my name.

再也没有人,为晚归的我留一盏灯火;
