Beneath our feet lies the thin layer of soil

that supports nearly all land-based life on our planet.

Many people take this precious natural resource for granted,

but healthy soil forms extremely slowly,

often requiring hundreds of years to build just a few centimeters.

Soil contains countless microorganisms,

decaying plant matter, minerals and water,

creating a living system that feeds crops and wild plants alike.

Heavy industrial farming puts huge pressure on topsoil.

Continuous single-crop planting depletes soil nutrients,

while overuse of chemical fertilizers damages tiny soil organisms.

Wind and rain also wash away loose topsoil easily

once plant roots no longer hold the ground together.

This destructive process is known as soil erosion,

and it gradually turns fertile farmland into barren wasteland.

Urban expansion, road construction and deforestation

further speed up the loss of valuable topsoil across the globe.

When soil quality drops sharply,

farm yields will decline and food security will face risks.

Scientists and farmers are testing practical protective methods,

such as crop rotation, reduced tillage and planting cover crops.

These measures help keep soil structure stable,

restore lost nutrients and slow the rate of erosion.

Protecting soil is a long-term task for humanity.

This invisible living layer cannot be replaced quickly,

and its health directly decides whether future generations

can gain stable food supplies from the land.

Many people take this precious natural resource for granted,

but healthy soil forms extremely slowly,

often requiring hundreds of years to build just a few centimeters.

Many people take this precious natural resource for granted

healthy soil forms extremely slowly

often requiring hundreds of years to build just a few centimeters

Protecting soil is a long-term task for humanity.

This invisible living layer cannot be replaced quickly,

and its health directly decides whether future generations

can gain stable food supplies from the land.

Protecting soil is a long-term task for humanity

This invisible living layer cannot be replaced quickly

its health directly decides

whether future generations can gain stable food supplies from the land

whether引导宾语从句,充当decides的宾语;
