Nestled in the arid desert hills on the west bank of the Nile River,

the Valley of the Kings stands as one of the most mysterious and precious

archaeological sites left by ancient Egyptian civilization.

Unlike the towering pyramids that are exposed on the open plains,

this remote valley was deliberately chosen by ancient Egyptian royals

as a hidden burial ground for pharaohs of the New Kingdom period.

For more than five hundred years,

from the 16th century BC to the 11th century BC,

almost all successive Egyptian pharaohs were buried in carefully carved

underground tombs scattered across this barren valley.

The birth of the Valley of the Kings originated from a painful historical lesson.

In the early era of Egyptian civilization, pharaohs built huge pyramids

as their eternal resting places, hoping to preserve their bodies and glory forever.

However, the grand and eye-catching pyramids became easy targets

for ancient tomb raiders. Most pyramid tombs were looted repeatedly,

with precious burial treasures stolen and royal mummies destroyed,

completely breaking the pharaohs’ pursuit of eternal afterlife.

To stop rampant tomb robbery and protect their mummies and funerary relics,

New Kingdom pharaohs completely abandoned the pyramid construction tradition.

They turned to the hidden, desolate desert valley on the west bank of the Nile.

Surrounded by towering rocky mountains and barren Gobi terrain,

the Valley of the Kings has no prominent landmarks on the surface,

making it extremely difficult for outsiders to discover hidden underground tombs.

Ancient Egyptian architects and craftsmen spent decades

digging deep tunnels and multi-chamber tombs in the hard rock layer,

designing complex passageways, fake corridors and sealed chambers

to confuse tomb raiders and ensure the safety of royal burials.

Each tomb in the Valley of the Kings is a complete underground palace

custom-built for a single pharaoh. The interior walls and ceilings

are fully covered with exquisite and vivid murals and hieroglyphic inscriptions.

These ancient paintings record the life achievements of the pharaoh,

the sacred rituals of ancient Egyptian religion,

the journey of the soul in the afterlife,

as well as the ancient people’s cognition of the sun, stars,

seasons and natural laws.

Every line of hieroglyphs and every painted scene carries

the religious beliefs, cultural customs and historical memories

of the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt,

forming a living underground history book.

Over dozens of dynasties, more than sixty royal tombs

were successively completed in the Valley of the Kings.

Famous pharaohs including Tutankhamun, Ramses II and Thutmose III

all settled their final resting places here.

Despite the extremely concealed tomb design and various anti-theft mechanisms,

most tombs still failed to escape the fate of being looted in ancient times.

Political turmoil, regime changes and long-term social poverty

drove countless people to take risks and steal royal funeral treasures,

and only a small number of intact tombs have been preserved to modern times.

Among all the discoveries in the Valley of the Kings,

the tomb of Tutankhamun is the most legendary and influential one.

Discovered intact in the early 20th century, this undamaged royal tomb

retained countless gold ornaments, ritual artifacts, precious jewels

and a well-preserved pharaoh mummy, completely restoring

the real scale and luxurious specifications of ancient Egyptian royal funerals.

This unprecedented archaeological discovery shocked the entire world

and pushed global public enthusiasm for ancient Egyptian culture to its peak.

Modern archaeological research has overturned many traditional cognitions

about the Valley of the Kings. Through high-precision scanning technology,

archaeologists have found many hidden unopened chambers underground,

and confirmed that the valley still contains undiscovered royal burial sites.

In addition to pharaohs’ tombs, some auxiliary tombs for nobles and craftsmen

have also been excavated, revealing the complete hierarchical burial system

of ancient Egyptian royal families.

The Valley of the Kings is far more than a cluster of ancient tombs.

It is a concentrated carrier of the peak civilization of ancient Egypt,

recording the religious system, architectural technology, artistic aesthetics

and social structure of the New Kingdom era.

After thousands of years of wind and sand erosion and historical changes,

this silent desert valley still retains the most authentic traces of ancient civilization.

Every archaeological exploration here allows modern humans

to get closer to the grand and mysterious ancient Egyptian era

and interpret the eternal pursuit of life and eternity by ancient people.
