In the past decades, education was the most reliable path

for ordinary people to change fate and achieve social upward mobility.

A college degree was once a guarantee of stable jobs,

decent income and improved living standards.

Students who completed higher education could easily

distinguish themselves from grassroots labor groups.

Hard study and academic certificates were regarded

as the fairest way to reward individual effort and talent.

Yet in modern society, this long-standing rule has completely failed.

The whole society is experiencing a silent but cruel phenomenon:

educational devaluation and widespread effort inflation.

With the rapid expansion of university enrollment,

higher education has changed from elite education to mass education.

More and more young people obtain college diplomas,

making academic degrees no longer scarce or competitive.

A bachelor’s degree, once a valuable advantage in job hunting,

has now become the most basic entry threshold for ordinary jobs.

Even many basic clerical and service positions

require university backgrounds that were once unnecessary.

The continuous rise of educational standards forms a forced cycle.

Job positions do not bring higher salary or better development,

but they constantly raise requirements for applicants’ academic background.

Young people have to keep upgrading their educational qualifications.

They pursue postgraduate degrees and professional certificates

not because their jobs require such advanced knowledge,

but merely to keep up with the minimum standards of the crowd.

Sociologists define this situation as effort inflation.

In economic inflation, money depreciates and prices rise.

In social inflation, individual effort depreciates and thresholds rise.

In the past, moderate effort could bring corresponding returns.

Today, people need to double or triple their sacrifice

to obtain the same reward that ordinary effort once achieved.

This invisible social pressure forces young people into passive competition.

Many students spend longer years in school and bear heavier academic pressure.

They take huge student loan debts and delay employment age,

sacrificing youth time, income accumulation and early social experience.

Yet after completing higher education,

they face the same ordinary jobs as previous generations.

Their extra effort and long-term investment

do not bring substantial improvement in salary and status.

The gap between educational investment and practical return

creates a strong sense of loss and powerlessness among youth.

Many young people question the meaning of endless academic pursuit.

They follow the trend of further education not out of personal willingness,

but out of fear of being eliminated in the job market.

They do what everyone else does, not for self-improvement,

but simply to avoid falling behind in the collective competition.

This social phenomenon reveals a deep structural problem.

Society no longer rewards individual ability and practical value.

It rigidly relies on labels, certificates and formal qualifications

to screen candidates and judge personal competitiveness.

Many posts with repetitive and simple work content

are matched with overly exaggerated academic requirements.

Talent resources are mismatched and seriously wasted.

Highly educated employees are engaged in basic trivial work,

unable to exert professional skills or realize personal value.

At the same time, the public’s definition of success becomes single.

Society believes higher degrees equal harder work and greater excellence.

It ignores practical skills, life experience and personal growth,

blindly pushing the whole younger generation into academic involution.

Effort inflation produces no real social progress.

It only increases the time cost and economic cost of young people,

delays independent growth and creates widespread youth anxiety.

True social progress should lower unnecessary competition thresholds,

match talent with positions, and value ability over formal labels.

When individual hard work can obtain reasonable and matching returns,

young people will regain faith in education and struggle.

Only when effort no longer depreciates blindly with the times

can society restore real fairness and effective upward mobility.
