Self-control《

选自詹姆斯·艾伦《As a Man Thinketh》

Self-control is the noblest mastery

that a human being can gain in life.

It is not the suppression of all natural feelings,

nor the cold denial of every desire.

It is the steady power of will,

to guide our passions and impulses,

and to act according to reason rather than blind instinct.

Many people are ruled by sudden impulses.

When anger rises, they speak hurtful words

without pausing to consider the results.

When temptation appears,

they yield easily to immediate pleasure,

ignoring the long-term harm hidden behind it.

They become prisoners of their own moods and desires.

They cannot direct their life,

for their inner emotions always take command.

Self-control grows from patient daily training.

It cannot be achieved in one single day,

nor can it be obtained through sudden inspiration.

It is built in small moments:

to stop ourselves from angry complaints,

to resist instant comfort when tasks remain unfinished,

to keep calm when facing unfair criticism.

Every small victory over self

strengthens the power of our will step by step.

A man with self-control keeps a clear mind

even in moments of disturbance.

He does not rejoice too wildly at success,

nor sink into deep despair when misfortune strikes.

He accepts joy without arrogance,

and bears hardship without complaint.

His inner world stays peaceful and steady,

no matter what changes take place in the outer world.

Self-control brings true freedom to the soul.

People often mistake freedom for doing whatever they want.

In truth, if one cannot restrain his own desires,

he will be enslaved by those endless cravings.

The truly free person

is he who can master himself.

He chooses his actions wisely,

instead of being dragged forward by blind passion.

Self-control is closely connected with character.

It shapes our habits and determines our conduct.

If we fail to restrain our weak sides,

our character will gradually become loose and fragile.

When we learn to discipline our mind and behaviour,

we build firm virtue within our heart.

A noble character is not born naturally,

it is forged by the long practice of self-mastery.

We should never give up the practice of self-control.

Even those with strong will may fall to temptation now and then.

Failure is not shame,

but giving up the effort to restrain ourselves.

Every time we pick ourselves up again,

and try to control our thoughts and deeds,

we move closer to the strength of self-mastery.

To conquer oneself is the greatest victory

that anyone can win in this world.

得志之时,不会狂喜失态;
