On Leisure《
选自伯特兰·罗素《In Praise of Idleness》
I think there is far too much work done in the world,
that immense harm is caused by the belief
that work is virtuous.
The road to happiness and prosperity
lies in an organised diminution of work.
The conception of duty, speaking historically,
was a device used by the powerful
to induce the rest of mankind to live for the advantage of their masters.
Of course, the masters concealed this fact
behind the idea of duty and moral obligation.
The ordinary man was told that duty means hard work,
and that idleness is a great sin.
The modern man, for the most part,
still believes in the virtue of hard labour.
He spends his days buried in routine tasks,
and treats leisure merely as a chance to recover strength
for returning to toil.
But leisure is not simply rest from labour.
It is an opportunity for freedom,
for thought, for wonder and for creative delight.
Many people, when they are free from work,
do not know what to do with themselves.
They have been trained only for labour,
and cannot enjoy the quiet hours of freedom.
They fill their spare time with trivial noise,
because silence brings them face to face with themselves.
They fear the stillness of leisure,
for it forces them to ask what they truly value in life.
Wisdom cannot be gained without leisure.
It is not in busy hours of hurried action
that we learn to see the world clearly.
Only when we are freed from urgent tasks,
can we observe, reflect, and taste the beauty of existence.
A life full of endless work,
without time for contemplation,
is a narrow and incomplete life.
This does not mean that we should do nothing at all.
It means we should separate necessary labour
from the free hours that belong to our own spirit.
Work should be limited to what is essential
to keep human society alive.
The rest of our time can be given over
to the pursuit of knowledge, art, friendship and quiet joy.
The good life, as I conceive it,
is inspired by love and guided by knowledge.
It needs room for leisure to grow.
If we are forever tied to heavy toil,
we lose the space to become fully human.
To value leisure rightly
is to understand one of the great secrets of human happiness.
