The Mark on the Wall《

选自弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫《The Mark on the Wall》

Perhaps it was the middle of January in the present year

that I first looked up and saw the mark on the wall.

In order to fix a date,

I must remember what I saw.

I remember the fire,

the yellow light upon the page of my book,

and the three chrysanthemums in the round glass bowl.

Yes, it must have been the winter time,

and we had just finished our tea,

for I remember that I was smoking a cigarette

when I looked up and saw the mark on the wall.

I looked up through the smoke of my cigarette

and my eye caught the mark.

It was a small round mark,

black upon the white wall,

about six or seven inches above the mantelpiece.

How readily our thoughts swarm upon a new object,

lifting it a little way,

like ants carrying a straw,

and then let it fall again.

If that mark was a nail,

it must have been driven in a long time ago.

For the nail had held a miniature,

the miniature of a lady with white powdered curls,

powdered cheeks,

and lips like red carnations.

A fraud of a picture,

for the former tenants of this house

would have bought such a thing,

and then, tired of it,

torn it down and left the nail bare.

But for that mark,

I might have had no thought at all.

The mark was a little token,

something that slipped into my mind

and set off a long chain of wandering thoughts.

I began to think of the buried cities under London,

of the old dead things,

of how life is full of mystery,

of how little we control our own thoughts.

What a strange thought,

that our life is but a thin crust laid over an unknown world.

Our mind seems to rule us,

yet any tiny thing,

a mark on a wall,

can break open the surface,

and let all sorts of forgotten ideas rush out.

And then I turned my eyes back to the mark on the wall.

It was still there,

soft and dark on the pale plaster.

It was not a nail-hole after all.

It was not even made by wood.

I reached out my hand,

and touched the wall.

It was raised;

it was round.

It could be a snail.
