I have ever had the sort of delight in children,
even from my earliest childhood,
which makes me fond of their innocent faces,
their simple talks,
and their gentle and unsuspicious manners.
I love to watch them play in the sunlit garden,
to listen to their soft laughter,
and to share their pure and heartful joy
that the worldly grown-up life can never offer.
Often, in the quiet hours of evening,
when my daily labour is ended
and the noise of the outer world fades away,
I fall into a sweet and melancholy reverie.
I picture myself as a father,
surrounded by lovely and obedient children,
who cling to my side,
look up to me with trusting eyes,
and listen patiently to every story I tell.
I tell them tales of their great-grandmother Field,
who once lived in a grand old mansion
among the peaceful countryside villages.
I describe how tall and graceful she was in her youth,
how she was admired by all neighbours
for her elegant manners and gentle temper.
She was once the best dancer in the whole county,
bright, lively, and full of youthful grace,
before cruel illness came to trouble her body.
Though disease bent her figure and brought constant pain,
it never subdued her noble spirit.
She remained kind, pious, and tender-hearted till her last day.
She knew almost all sacred verses by heart,
devoted herself to prayers and good deeds,
and won sincere respect from every villager,
both the poor folk and the local gentry around.
I tell my dream children
how she dwelt alone in that quiet ancient house,
in a solitary chamber through long silent nights.
Old legends lingered in that lonely building.
People said that little child spirits
would glide up and down the long staircase after midnight,
yet those innocent phantoms never brought harm or terror,
but wandered softly within the old wooden halls.
I talk to them of their great-uncle John,
who was handsome, spirited, and noble in his youth.
He was bold, energetic, and full of vitality,
far different from those timid and lonely children
who mope silently in hidden corners.
He loved riding the most fiery and spirited horses,
ran freely across the wide countryside,
and became the pride and model of the whole family.
I recall the old days of my own childhood,
the times when my feet were lame and painful.
My elder brother would carry me for miles,
protect me from wind and rain,
and comfort me in every helpless moment.
He tended me with endless patience and sincere care,
and relieved all my childish sufferings and sorrows.
As I speak these soft old stories,
my two dream children, little Alice and gentle John,
stand quietly beside me,
their eyes filled with warm admiration and soft pity.
Little Alice would unconsciously lift her small foot,
as if imitating the graceful dance of her great-grandmother,
then calm herself when she sees my solemn look.
They lean closely on my shoulders,
hold my hands tightly with their tiny fingers,
and listen breathlessly to every old memory.
Their innocent faces glow with soft candlelight,
pure, warm, and free from all worldly worries.
In this gentle dream,
I possess the sweetest happiness a mortal man can feel.
Yet gradually, the scene begins to fade and change.
The soft light grows dim,
the warm figures of the children turn faint and misty.
Their faces become paler and more distant,
receding slowly from my reach,
step by step, farther and farther away.
A faint and mournful voice floats in the empty dream:
We are not real children of yours,
nor do we belong to any living mother.
We are only dreams,
the shadow of what might have been.
We are nothing, less than nothing in the real world.
We are merely the unborn hopes and faded fantasies,
shaped from your endless lonely longing.
At last, the lovely dream breaks completely.
I wake gently from my sentimental reverie.
I find myself sitting alone in my old armchair,
in a quiet empty room.
The warm children are gone without a trace,
the sweet voices and soft embraces disappear entirely.
Nothing remains but silent night, cold wind,
and my endless quiet melancholy.
I am still the lonely bachelor,
living alone with old memories and endless thoughts.
Those beautiful childlike joys,
those warm family affections,
are nothing but a fleeting and tender dream,
which can never be possessed in my real life.
