The Pageant of Summer《
选自理查德·杰弗里斯《The Life of the Fields》
The great sun, the light of summer,
comes slowly over the wooded hills,
and fills the world with warmth and life.
It is not the faint, chilly sunshine of spring,
nor the brief, dying glow of autumn.
This summer sunlight is full, deep, and powerful,
pouring over meadow, forest, stream and hedgerow,
touching every leaf and blade of grass with golden fire.
Stand in the meadow at the height of summer,
and you behold a pageant of life too vast for words.
The grass rises thick and tall,
interwoven with countless wild flowers:
clover, buttercup, oxeye daisy,
and the small blue blossoms that hide among the stalks.
Bees drift heavily from bloom to bloom,
their wings humming low and steady in the warm air.
Butterflies float past on painted wings,
lingering a moment above a flower,
then drifting onward through the soft bright haze.
The woods are full of secret sounds.
High in the branches, birds sing endlessly,
not the hurried mating songs of early spring,
but lazy, rich notes, poured out for pure delight.
A wood pigeon coos deep and drowsy from an oak.
A wren chirps sharply from the thick underbrush.
Even when the wind falls still,
the wood is never silent.
There is the faint rustle of insects crawling,
the soft stir of leaves breathing in the heat,
and the quiet whisper of life moving everywhere.
Down by the brook, the water runs slow and clear,
shining like molten glass beneath the sun.
Water plants lift their green leaves above the surface.
Small fish dart in and out among the stems,
flashing silver for an instant before they vanish.
The bank is lined with ferns and wild mint,
whose sharp sweet scent rises when you brush against it.
Dragonflies hover above the stiller pools,
their transparent wings catching the sunlight,
as if they carry fragments of the summer sky.
Summer is not merely warmth and brightness.
It is the full ripening of all living things.
The sap rises strong in the trees,
the grain swells in the wheat field,
the berries swell and darken on the bramble vines.
Every plant strives to bloom, to seed, to multiply,
as if the earth itself pours forth all its hidden power
in these long, sun-drenched days.
There is a stillness in the noon of summer,
a heavy, golden quiet that wraps the land.
It is not the empty silence of winter.
It is a quiet filled with life,
a pause in which all creation basks and grows.
The heat hangs in the air,
and the whole world seems to slow down,
drinking deep of the sun’s abundant gift.
Yet this splendid pageant will not last forever.
Summer builds its beauty in full strength,
but it carries the seed of its own ending within it.
The ripeness that makes the world so glorious
is also the first step toward autumn’s decay.
Still, for these perfect days,
the earth unfolds its greatest wonder,
a magnificent living pageant of summer,
unmatched in richness, colour, and endless vitality.
