Street Haunting《
The hour should be evening,
and the season winter.
For in winter,
the champagne brightness of the air
and the sociability of the streets are grateful.
We go out to buy a pencil,
so simple an errand that we may excuse ourselves
for stepping from our own room
into the whole world of London.
As we step out of the house
on a fine evening between four and six,
we shed the self our friends know us by,
and become part of that vast republican army of anonymous trampers,
whose society is so agreeable
after the solitude of one’s own room.
Within the four walls of our chamber,
we are shaped by countless small things.
We carry our own identity,
bound by memories, habits and little attachments.
But once the front door shuts behind us,
the shell-like covering which our souls have excreted to house themselves
is broken.
There is left,
of all these wrinkles and roughnesses,
a central oyster of perceptiveness,
an enormous eye.
How beautiful a London street is then,
with its islands of light,
and its long groves of darkness.
On one side of it perhaps some tree-sprinkled,
grass-grown space,
where night is folding herself to sleep naturally.
As one passes the iron railing,
one hears those little cracklings and stirrings of leaf and twig.
They seem to carry the silence of faraway fields,
an owl hooting in the distance,
and the faint rattle of a train in the valley.
Lamps spring up one by one,
pale gold against the blue dusk.
The shops pour forth their glow,
illuminating the faces of passers-by.
We glance at strangers’ faces as we walk.
From a single fleeting expression,
we weave a whole unseen life story.
A woman hurrying home with a basket;
an old man lingering by a bookshop window;
a child pressing their palms against the glass.
Each carries a secret world hidden behind their eyes.
The eye is not a miner,
not a diver,
not a seeker after buried treasure.
It floats us smoothly down a stream.
It rests,
and then it drifts onward.
It sees everything,
yet grasps nothing firmly.
This is the magic of wandering in the city.
We are no longer tied to our own worries,
our private griefs or narrow cares.
We melt into the crowd,
and for a while,
we are nobody,
and therefore we can be everybody.
We enter bookshops,
where old pages breathe out the scent of time.
We peer into jewellers’ windows,
and watch the cold sparkle of gems.
We pass restaurants warm with voices,
and dark alleyways wrapped in quiet shadow.
All these scenes brush lightly against our senses,
not to possess,
only to observe and imagine.
The evening hour gives us that light irresponsibility,
which darkness and lamplight bestow.
We are no longer quite ourselves.
Yet when the hour grows late,
we must turn back home again.
The spell of the street fades slowly.
We regain our old identity,
our private memories,
and the small self we left behind at home.
We return,
with the pencil we set out to buy in hand,
yet richer by a thousand fleeting visions
borrowed from the wandering streets of London.
提着菜篮匆匆归家的妇人;
在书店窗边驻足徘徊的老者;
As we step out of the house
on a fine evening between four and six,
we shed the self our friends know us by,
and become part of that vast republican army of anonymous trampers,
whose society is so agreeable
after the solitude of one’s own room.
As引导时间状语从句;
主句主干:we shed the self and become part of that army;
省略关系代词的定语从句our friends know us by,修饰the self;
whose引导非限制性定语从句,先行词trampers;
We shed our familiar self,
and join the army of anonymous wanderers.
When we walk into the crowd at dusk,
we lay down the roles others assign to us,
and taste the quiet freedom that only strangers can bring.
原句:The shell-like covering which our souls have excreted to house themselves
is broken.
There is left,
of all these wrinkles and roughnesses,
a central oyster of perceptiveness,
an enormous eye.
which引导定语从句修饰covering;
主句谓语is broken;
正常语序a central oyster of perceptiveness is left;
The outer shell of our soul breaks away,
leaving only pure perception.
伍尔夫标志性意象。将人格、社会身份比作灵魂的外壳;
The heavy mask we wear in daily life falls away,
leaving a quiet heart open to all the subtle beauty of the world.
