The Most Beautiful Grave《

选自斯蒂芬·茨威格《The Most Beautiful Grave》

Of all the sights I saw in Russia,

none was more grand and touching

than the grave of Tolstoy.

A sacred place,

to be revered by generations to come,

it lies far from the noise of the world,

lonely beneath the shade of trees.

Following a narrow winding path,

through woodland clearings and bushes,

you arrive before the tomb.

It is nothing more than a small rectangular mound of earth,

unguarded and untended,

sheltered only by several tall trees.

His granddaughter told me

these tall trees swaying gently in the early autumn wind

were planted by Tolstoy himself.

When he was a child,

he and his brother Nikolai heard an old legend,

that a place where you plant trees with your own hands

will become a land of happiness.

So the two boys planted saplings on their estate,

and soon forgot this childhood game.

In his later years,

Tolstoy recalled this old tale

and the wonderful promise of happiness.

The weary old man suddenly gained

a fresh and finer revelation.

He expressed his wish

to be buried under those trees he had planted.

And so it was done,

exactly as Tolstoy desired.

His grave became the most beautiful,

most impressive and moving grave on earth.

It is merely a little rectangular mound in the woods,

covered with blooming flowers.

There is no cross,

no tombstone,

no epitaph,

not even the name Tolstoy.

This great man,

burdened more than anyone by his fame,

was laid to rest without a name,

like a stray wanderer found by chance,

or an unknown soldier.

Anyone may step into his final resting place.

The sparse wooden fence around it never closes.

Nothing protects the peace of Leo Tolstoy,

except people’s respect.

Usually people come with curiosity

to disturb the quiet of great men’s graves.

Here,

the overwhelming simplicity suppresses

any casual mood of sightseeing,

and forbids you to speak loudly.

The wind rustles in the trees over this nameless grave.

Warm sunshine plays upon the mound.

In winter,

snow gently covers the dark earth.

Whether you pass by in summer or winter,

you can hardly imagine

this small raised rectangle holds

one of the greatest souls of our age.

Yet it is precisely this absence of a name

that strikes the heart more deeply

than all marble monuments and luxurious decorations.

Of all the sights I saw in Russia,

none was more grand and touching

than the grave of Tolstoy.

A sacred place,

to be revered by generations to come,

it lies far from the noise of the world,

lonely beneath the shade of trees.

none was more…than,表达最高级含义,

意为“没有什么比……更”;

I saw in Russia是省略关系代词的定语从句修饰sights。

用来补充描述后面的it(坟墓);

to be revered by generations to come

是不定式作后置定语,表被动含义;

far from the noise of the world为地点状语。

Among all views in Russia,

Tolstoy’s grave was the most grand and touching.

It is a holy site respected by later people,

resting quietly away from worldly chaos.

Of all the scenes I witnessed in the mountain,

none was more peaceful and impressive

than the old hermit’s cottage.

A quiet refuge,

to be cherished by travelers for years ahead,

it stays far from crowds and bustle,

silent among green woods.

复刻“of all…, none more…than”最高级句式,

Yet it is precisely this absence of a name

that strikes the heart more deeply

than all marble monuments and luxurious decorations.

本句为强调句型 it is…that…,

用来突出主语this absence of a name(无名);

The lack of a name

touches people’s hearts more than fancy stone tombs.

Yet it is precisely this quiet persistence

that moves people more powerfully

than all splendid speeches and empty promises.

完整套用it is…that强调句型+比较结构,
