The Road Not Taken《
选自罗伯特·弗罗斯特《The Road Not Taken》
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
因为它荒草萋萋,等待人踏访;
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
本句为并列句,由多个and连接分句;
sorry I could not travel both 是省略句,
and I was sorry that I could not travel both,
that引导宾语从句;
as far as I could 是as far as引导的程度状语从句,表示“尽我所能”;
to where it bent in the undergrowth 中where引导宾语从句,作介词to的宾语;
Two roads separated in yellow woods.
I could not walk both roads,
so I stood and watched one road stretch into bushes.
Two paths separated on the quiet hillside,
And sad I could not take them both
And as one wanderer, long I paused
And stared along one as far as I might
To where it turned behind the pine trees.
完全复刻原文并列分句+省略结构 + as far as程度从句的诗歌句式;
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
表达多年之后持续回想这件事;
ages and ages hence
hence为副词,意为“今后,此后”;
the one less traveled by
完整:the one (which was) less traveled by;
that has made all the difference 中that指代前面整件选择道路的事情,
Many years later I will recall this with a sigh.
I chose the road fewer people took, and this choice changed everything.
less traveled by,突出选择的独特性;
has made all the difference强调选择带来终身影响。
I shall recall this with soft reflection
Somewhere years and years thereafter:
Two choices appeared before me, and I—
I picked the path fewer people dared try,
And that has shaped my whole life.
原样套用将来进行时、后置定语、破折号停顿强调结构;
