Shooting an Elephant《
At that time, I served as a British police officer stationed in Burma,
trapped in the contradiction of colonial rule.
I hated the imperial system deeply,
yet I was also a member of the ruling force despised by local people.
One day, I received an urgent call.
A tame elephant had broken its chain and run wild in the market.
It destroyed stalls, trampled goods and even killed a local resident.
I took my rifle and rode a pony to the scene,
followed by a growing crowd of Burmese townsfolk.
When I finally caught sight of the elephant,
it was quietly eating grass by the roadside.
Its rage had faded away completely.
It looked harmless and peaceful, just like a mild cow.
I realized clearly that I should not shoot it.
Once the elephant calmed down, its owner could come and take it back.
I turned and glanced at the massive crowd behind me.
More than two thousand people gathered,
all eyes fixed firmly on me and the gun in my hand.
They expected eagerly that I would shoot the elephant.
They were not fond of me,
but they regarded this shooting as a wonderful show.
A white colonial officer must never appear cowardly in front of the natives.
That was the unspoken rule of the empire.
If I gave up shooting and walked away,
the whole crowd would laugh at me and treat me as a fool.
I felt a heavy invisible pressure from the crowd.
Though my reason told me not to kill the innocent beast,
I had to pull the trigger to save my dignity.
When I fired the first bullet,
I heard the wild cheer bursting from the surrounding crowd.
The elephant did not fall immediately.
It suffered a strange and terrible change.
It seemed paralyzed by the bullet,
yet still stood unsteadily on its shaking legs.
I fired shot after shot at the same spot.
The huge beast sank slowly to its knees,
with its trunk lifting feebly toward the sky.
It gave out a long trumpet cry,
then crashed heavily to the ground with a roar shaking the earth.
The elephant did not pass away quickly.
It lay there, breathing painfully for half an hour.
I left the scene with a tangled heart.
For years afterwards, I kept thinking about this incident.
I understood that I shot the elephant not out of necessity,
but merely to avoid being laughed at by the crowd.
I hated the imperial system deeply,
yet I was also a member of the ruling force despised by local people.
相当于定语从句that was despised by local people,语句凝练简洁。
I disliked colonial empire deeply,
but I belonged to the ruling group hated by the natives.
He opposed the unfair rules deeply,
yet he was also a part of the system accepted by most people.
If I gave up shooting and walked away,
the whole crowd would laugh at me and treat me as a fool.
I felt a heavy invisible pressure from the crowd.
Though my reason told me not to kill the innocent beast,
I had to pull the trigger to save my dignity.
though引导让步状语从句,表语义转折;
句尾to save my dignity动词不定式作目的状语,
The crowd would mock me if I stopped shooting.
I bore great unseen pressure.
My mind told me to spare the harmless elephant,
but I must fire to keep my face.
If I gave up insisting and stepped back,
all the audience would doubt me and regard me as a coward.
She bore endless silent pressure from the public.
Though her conscience told her not to hurt the weak creature,
she had to make the choice to maintain her reputation.
For years afterwards, I kept thinking about this incident.
I understood that I shot the elephant not out of necessity,
but merely to avoid being laughed at by the crowd.
to avoid being laughed at是动词不定式作目的状语;
being laughed at是动名词被动形式,作avoid的宾语。
I reflected on this event for many years.
I realized I killed the elephant not because I had to,
but only to escape the mockery of the crowd.
not…but…
For a long time afterwards, she kept reflecting on this choice.
She realized that she made that decision not out of willingness,
but merely to avoid being judged severely by others.

实则被这套权力规则束缚,不得不维持威严的假象;
