In a corner of the world there existed a man-made miracle, the Summer Palace.

Art has two principles, the idea, which produces European art,

and the fantasy, which produces Oriental art.

The Summer Palace belongs to fantasy art.

Almost a superhuman work of fantasy,

the Summer Palace was what fantasy can create,

when combined with marble, jade, bronze, porcelain, cedar,

tapestry, silk, crystal and flowers.

It was a gigantic dream of stone,

a palace and a temple, built by generations.

All the treasures of all peoples were gathered there.

It was not one single work, but a whole collection of art.

Imagine some indescribable building,

something like a fairy’s palace in a dream.

That was the Summer Palace.

It had two parts: one great structure,

and the garden surrounding it.

We Europeans call ourselves civilized,

and we regard the Chinese as barbarians.

This is what civilization has done to barbarism.

History records that two robbers broke into the Summer Palace.

One plundered, the other set fire.

One robber was France, the other England.

Together they divided the spoils.

It is the story of two bandits.

Before history, one of the two conquerors,

France, will carry away half of this trophy.

I protest this looting.

It grieves me deeply to witness such destruction.

There are conquerors and thieves in history.

France has gained a huge treasure,

but now it is the thief who returns the treasure to China.
