Three hundred and forty-eight years, six months,
and nineteen days ago,
the citizens of Paris awoke to the sound of all the bells pealing loudly,
within the triple enclosure of the old town, the university quarter,
and the city.
Yet the date of January 6, 1482,
has not remained a memorable day in history.
Nothing remarkable happened on that day,
except the celebration of two festivals joined together:
the Feast of the Epiphany and the Festival of Fools.
On that day crowds flowed through every street in Paris.
Men and women talked, laughed, and walked freely.
Every face was bright, every heart light.
It was one of those rare days,
when all classes of people cast aside their worries and mingle together.
The great hall of the Palace of Justice was packed with spectators.
The cold winter sun poured its pale light through the tall windows.
People squeezed on benches, stood in aisles,
climbed onto pillars and railings,
to wait for the election of the Pope of Fools.
This strange custom was simple:
whoever made the ugliest and most terrible face,
should be chosen as the Pope of Fools,
and receive cheers and admiration from all the crowd.
Three hundred and forty-eight years,
six months, and nineteen days ago,
the citizens of Paris awoke to the sound of all the bells pealing loudly,
within the triple enclosure of the old town,
the university quarter, and the city.
348 years, six months and nineteen days ago,
Parisian citizens woke up hearing loud ringing bells,
inside the three districts: old town, university quarter and city.
One hundred and twenty-two years,
three months and eight days ago,
the villagers awoke to the sound of trumpets echoing far away,
within the quiet valley, the forest and the riverside plain.
Yet the date of January 6, 1482,
has not remained a memorable day in history.
Nothing remarkable happened on that day,
except the celebration of two festivals joined together:
the Feast of the Epiphany and the Festival of Fools.
joined together过去分词短语后置修饰two festivals;
But January 6th, 1482,
is not a famous day in history.
No great event took place,
apart from two combined festivals:
Epiphany and the Festival of Fools.
Yet the morning of July 15,
has not remained a remarkable time in records.
Nothing important occurred on that morning,
except a small gathering joined together:
the flower fair and the poetry meeting.
This strange custom was simple:
whoever made the ugliest and most terrible face,
should be chosen as the Pope of Fools,
and receive cheers and admiration from all the crowd.
and连接并列谓语should be chosen与(should) receive。
The odd rule was easy:
Anyone who made the most hideous face
would be elected the Pope of Fools,
and gain cheers and praise from all people.
This special rule was plain:
whoever offered the warmest and most sincere words,
should be elected as the leader of the group,
and receive respect and trust from all the members.

很多人拥有俊朗外表,内心却阴险歹毒;
