Jane Eyre《
Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you?
Do you think I am an automaton?
A machine without feelings?
And can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips,
and my drop of living water dashed from my cup?
Do you think,
because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little,
I am soulless and heartless?
You think wrong!
I have as much soul as you,
and full as much heart!
And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth,
I should have made it as hard for you to leave me,
as it is now for me to leave you.
I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom,
conventionalities,
nor even of mortal flesh:
it is my spirit that addresses your spirit;
just as both had passed through the grave,
and we stood at God’s feet,
equal — as we are!
I know that the world often judges people by appearance and status.
It honors the wealthy, the noble, and the beautiful,
while ignoring the quiet dignity of the poor and ordinary.
Many people would choose to compromise themselves for love,
to humble their hearts,
to disguise their true thoughts,
and to become obedient appendages of others.
But I will never do so.
I would endure loneliness, poverty, and hardship,
rather than sacrifice my self-respect and independent soul.
Love is not humble submission,
not flattery and dependence,
nor the exchange of status and wealth.
True love is the encounter of two equal souls,
the resonance of independent minds,
and the mutual respect between two complete individuals.
I do not deny my affection for you.
My heart is deeply attached to Thornfield,
to every tree and every breeze here,
and most of all to you who have walked with me through countless quiet days.
Yet affection can never conquer my reason,
nor trample on my dignity.
If love requires me to abandon my personality,
to lower my soul,
and to live in humble deference forever,
I would rather give up all tenderness and stay free alone.
No human being can be inferior to another in soul.
All worldly gaps of wealth, rank, and appearance
are trivial and temporary.
In the face of life, death, and divinity,
every soul is born equal,
equally noble, equally complete,
and equally worthy of respect.
Do you think,
because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little,
I am soulless and heartless?
You think wrong!
I have as much soul as you,
and full as much heart!
后半句采用对称比较级结构as much…as…,
Do you believe worldly poverty and ordinariness
mean the absence of soul and true feeling?
In fact, my soul and heart
are completely equal to yours.
Do you think,
because I am ordinary, quiet, unknown, and mild,
I am thoughtless and passionless?
You think wrong!
I have as much dream as you,
and full as much persistence!
And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth,
I should have made it as hard for you to leave me,
as it is now for me to leave you.
主句嵌套双重as…as…
If I were blessed with beauty and fortune,
you would also experience the same pain of parting
that I am suffering now.

it is my spirit that addresses your spirit;
just as both had passed through the grave,
and we stood at God’s feet,
equal — as we are!
本句为强调句it is…that…
Our souls are communicating equally beyond flesh and world.
Before life and death and God,
we are born equal in spirit.

it is my sincerity that responds to your sincerity;
just as both have transcended mortal vanity,
and we stand before the truth,
equal — as we should always be!
