Many years had elapsed during which nothing of Combray,

save what was comprised in the theatre

and the drama of my going to bed there,

had any existence for me.

One winter evening,

when I came home,

my mother, seeing that I was cold,

offered me some tea,

a thing I did not usually take.

I refused at first,

and then, I know not why,

changed my mind.

She sent for one of those squat,

plump little cakes called “petites madeleines,”

which look as though they had been

moulded in the fluted valve of a scallop shell.

And soon, mechanically,

dispirited after a dreary day with the prospect of a depressing morrow,

I raised to my lips a spoonful of the tea

in which I had soaked a morsel of the cake.

No sooner had the warm liquid,

and the crumbs with it,

touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body,

and I stopped,

intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place.

An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses,

something isolated,

detached,

with no suggestion of its origin.

And at once the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me,

its disasters innocuous,

its brevity illusory — this new sensation

having had on me the effect which love

has of filling me with a precious essence;

or rather this essence was not in me,

it was myself.

I had ceased now to feel mediocre,

accidental,

mortal.

Whence could it have come to me,

this all-powerful joy?

I was conscious that it was connected with the taste of tea and cake,

but that it infinitely transcended those savours,

could not, indeed,

be of the same nature as they.

When did it come?

What did it mean?

How could I seize and apprehend it?

I drink a second mouthful,

in which I find nothing more than in the first,

a third,

which gives me rather less than the second.

It is time to stop;

the virtue of the drink appears to fade.

Clearly the truth I seek lies not within the cup,

but within myself.

The cake’s taste summons back a forgotten moment,

a buried memory from Combray,

long hidden deep in my unconscious mind.

Slowly,

the image rises up.

It is Sunday morning at Combray,

my aunt Léonie breaking off a piece of madeleine

and dipping it in her tea to give to me.

The whole of Combray and its surroundings,

taking shape and solidity,

sprang into being,

town and gardens,

emerging from my cup of tea.

用珍贵的精髓填满我的灵魂;

感受到的并不比第一口更多;

No sooner had the warm liquid,

and the crumbs with it,

touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body,

and I stopped,

intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place.

No sooner…than…

and the crumbs with it作为插入语,补充伴随事物。

intent upon…是形容词短语作伴随状语,修饰主语I;

that were taking place是限制性定语从句,

As soon as the warm tea and cake crumbs touched my tongue,

I felt a shudder all over my body and paused,

focusing on the strange transformation inside me.

No sooner had the soft wind,

and the flower scent with it,

touched my cheek than a warmth spread through my whole heart,

and I paused,

aware of the gentle remembrance that was awakening.

And at once the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me,

its disasters innocuous,

its brevity illusory — this new sensation

having had on me the effect which love

has of filling me with a precious essence;

or rather this essence was not in me,

it was myself.

本句包含独立主格结构 this new sensation having had…,

the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me为主句;

its disasters innocuous,

Suddenly life’s ups and downs meant nothing to me.

Calamities felt harmless and life’s shortness seemed unreal.

This strange feeling filled my soul with precious substance.

Strictly speaking,

this substance was not inside me — it was my true self.

And at once the noise of the world had become distant to me,

its troubles light,

its hurry meaningless —

this quiet moment having had on me the

effect which peace has of filling me with pure serenity;

or rather this serenity was not in me,

it was myself.

Clearly the truth I seek lies not within the cup,

but within myself.

The cake’s taste summons back a forgotten moment,

a buried memory from Combray,

long hidden deep in my unconscious mind.

I seek 是省略关系代词that的定语从句修饰truth;

not…but…

a buried memory from Combray

解释说明forgotten moment;

long hidden deep in my unconscious mind

Obviously, the truth I search for exists not in the cup,

but deep inside my own mind.

The flavour of cake calls up a buried

memory of Combray hidden in my subconscious.

Clearly the warmth I seek lies not within the gift,

but within myself.

The old song brings back a forgotten afternoon,

a faint memory from childhood,

long hidden deep in my quiet heart.

复刻定语从句 + not…but…

交代贡布雷记忆长久沉寂;

冬日傍晚偶然喝茶、品尝玛德琳蛋糕;

味觉刺激带来突如其来的全身震颤与极致愉悦;

主人公思索这份喜悦来自何处,发现远超食物本身;

反复品尝,魔力逐渐减弱;

领悟真相不在外物而在内心;

多年前贡布雷的往事,靠刻意回想无法重现;
