Many years later,
as he faced the firing squad,
Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon
when his father took him to discover ice.
At that time Macondo was a village of twenty adobe houses,
built on the bank of a river of clear water
that ran along a bed of polished stones,
which were huge and white,
like prehistoric eggs.
The world was so recent
that many things lacked names,
and in order to indicate them
it was necessary to point.
Every year in the month of March,
a ragged gypsy family would set up their tents near the village,
and with a great uproar of pipes and kettledrums
they would display new inventions.
First they brought the magnet.
A heavy gypsy with an untamed beard
and sparrow hands held up before the public
the first magnet of what was perhaps a magnificent flying machine.
He moved two iron bars from house to house,
and everybody saw how nails,
bolts,
and small metal objects tore loose from where they were fixed,
and they tumbled after the two magic bars.
José Arcadio Buendía,
whose unrestrained imagination always went beyond the power of nature,
and even further than miracles and magic,
thought that this useless scientific discovery
could be used to extract gold from the earth.
The gypsy told him:
“The magnet is not good for that.”
But José Arcadio Buendía at that time did not believe gypsies.
He traded his mule and a pair of goats for the two magnet bars,
hoping to dig up enough gold to pave the floors of his house.
For months he struggled.
He dragged the two iron bars over every inch of ground,
shouting strange incantations,
but the only thing he managed to dig up
was a rusted suit of armor from the sixteenth century.
Then came the magnifying glass.
The gypsies brought a huge lens,
and they demonstrated how sunlight could be focused
to burn dry grass.
José Arcadio Buendía,
who never rested in his pursuit of knowledge,
immediately dreamed of using this invention as a weapon of war.
He spent long hours studying the angles of the sun,
planning a deadly strategy
that could burn the enemy army from a distance.
Úrsula,
his wife,
warned him that he was losing his mind.
But he would not listen.
He was obsessed with the wonders of the world beyond Macondo.

这个故事告诉我们:执念带来追寻,也带来孤独;
