And now,
I said,
let me show in a figure
how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened.
Behold!
Human beings living in an underground den,
which has a mouth open towards the light
and reaching all along the den.
Here they have been from their childhood,
and have their legs and necks chained
so that they cannot move,
and can only see before them,
being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads.
Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance,
and between the fire and the prisoners
there is a raised way.
And you will see,
if you look,
a low wall built along the way,
like the screen which marionette players have in front of them,
over which they show their puppets.
Men pass along the wall carrying all sorts of vessels,
statues,
and figures of animals made of wood,
stone,
and every kind of material.
Some of the passersby speak as they walk,
while others remain completely silent.
The prisoners,
who cannot turn their heads in any direction,
have never seen anything more than the dark shadows
flashing on the smooth stone wall before their eyes.
They believe that the flickering shadows,
the echoing voices,
and the changing shapes
are the whole truth of the entire world.
If one prisoner is finally released from his chains,
and forced to stand up and turn his neck around,
he will suffer sharp pains and great confusion.
The firelight will dazzle his eyes,
and he will be unable to recognize the real objects
whose shadows he has watched all his life.
He will think that the shadows he once knew
are far more real and clear
than the true forms now revealed to him.

People live in an underground cave from childhood.
Chains lock their legs and necks,
stopping them from moving or turning their heads
and limiting their sight to only the front wall.
People dwelling in a narrow circle of life,
which has a boundary blocking the distance
and surrounding all their days.
Here they have stayed from their youth,
and have their minds and thoughts limited
so that they cannot advance,
and can only see the present,
being trapped by prejudice from exploring the wider world.
And do you think,
that these prisoners would have seen anything of themselves,
or of one another,
except the shadows which the fire throws on the opposite wall of the cave?
Do you believe the trapped prisoners can recognize real selves and others,
apart from the shadow images cast by fire on the cave wall?
And do you believe,
that ordinary people can understand the truth of life,
or of the world,
except the appearances which life shows on the superficial surface of reality?
If one prisoner is finally released from his chains,
and forced to stand up and turn his neck around,
he will suffer sharp pains and great confusion.
If a prisoner breaks free from long-term bondage
and changes his fixed posture,
he will endure physical pain and mental confusion.
If one person is finally freed from his fixed thinking,

最可怕的禁锢,从不是身体的牢笼,而是思想的停滞;
