I am undertaking a task which is without precedent,
and which will have no imitator.
I propose to set before my fellow human beings
a man in all the truth of nature,
and this man shall be myself.
I alone.
I know my own heart,
and I have studied mankind.
I am not made like any of those I have seen.
I venture to believe
that I am not made like any one in existence.
If I am not better,
at least I am different.
Whether nature did well or ill
in breaking the mold in which she formed me,
only after reading my book
can anyone finally judge.
Let the trumpet of the last judgment sound when it will,
I will come forward with this book in my hand,
and present myself before the supreme judge.

This is what I have done,
what I have thought,
and what I have been.
I have shown the good and the evil,
the pure and the corrupt,
the noble and the base within my soul,
without disguise,
without pretense,
without excuse.
I have laid bare my innermost self,
exposing all my faults,
all my weaknesses,
all my hidden desires and foolish mistakes,
just as I truly am.
Let every mortal gather round my throne,
let them listen sincerely to my deepest confessions.
Let them blush for my depravity,
let them tremble for my sufferings,
let them grieve for my trivial sins and childish flaws.
Let each person in turn reveal their own heart’s failings,
their secret wanderings,
their hidden hypocrisy and inner darkness,
with the same unreserved honesty.
And then,
if any man dares,
let him stand forth and declare:
I was better than this man.
Throughout my life,
I have often felt confused and tormented.
I have experienced weakness and cowardice,
committed mistakes and wrongs,
yielded to temptation and indulged in foolishness.
I have envied others,
spoken false words,
escaped responsibility,
and fled from difficulties in despair.
Yet in all my imperfection,
I have always loved truth,
pursued sincerity,
and hated pretense and hypocrisy more than anything else in the world.
My faults belong only to myself,
my virtues are the gift of heaven.
I have no desire to deceive the world,
no intention to beautify my soul,
and no courage to cover up my past sins.
I choose to confess everything openly,
to accept all blame and judgment,
and to face my true self without fear.
