I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really.

Get busy living, or get busy dying.

That’s goddamn right.

First you hate ’em,

then you get used to ’em.

Enough time passes,

you get so you depend on ’em.

That’s institutionalized.

They send you here for life,

and that’s exactly what they take.

The part that counts, anyway.

I had to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged.

Their feathers are just too bright.

And when they fly away,

the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice.

But still,

the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone.

I guess I just miss my friend.

Hope is a good thing,

maybe the best of things,

and no good thing ever dies.

Andy Dufresne came to Shawshank Prison in early 1947,

convicted of murdering his wife and her lover.

He was thirty years old then,

a slender, quiet man with pale skin and dark hair.

He did not cry on his first night in the cell,

unlike most new prisoners who screamed and sobbed in terror.

Red, the narrator, watched him from across the cell block,

wondering what was going on inside that still head.

Prison life grinds people down slowly.

The walls close in day by day.

At first, every rule feels heavy,

every guard feels like an enemy.

As years slip by,

men stop fighting.

They learn the schedule,

learn to keep their heads down,

learn not to hope.

Hope becomes dangerous in Shawshank.

It can eat you up from inside if you let it.

But Andy was different.

He did not surrender to the gray routine.

He played opera over the prison loudspeakers once,

letting the music float across the yard.

For a few short minutes,

every inmate stood still,

feeling freedom touch their hearts,

even though they were still locked behind stone walls.

Andy told Red that hope could not be locked away.

Prison can take your freedom,

take your time,

take your dignity,

but it cannot take your mind or your choice of spirit.

He waited patiently for decades,

chipping away at the concrete wall with a tiny rock hammer,

one small piece at a time.

No one believed a man could dig a tunnel out of a prison cell.

Everyone thought it was impossible.

Freedom is not just being outside the walls.

Freedom lives in your mind,

if you refuse to let fear and despair chain your thoughts.

I had to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged.

Their feathers are just too bright.

And when they fly away,

the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice.

But still,

the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone.

第一句that引导宾语从句;

aren’t meant to be caged

从句内部嵌套that引导定语从句修饰the part of you;

the place you live in里you live in是省略关系代词的定语从句;

句尾that they’re gone作原因状语。

I had to keep telling myself some birds should never be kept in cages.

Their feathers are far too brilliant.

When they fly away,

the part inside you which understands locking them up is wrong truly feels happy.

Yet the home where you stay becomes duller

and emptier because they left.

I have to keep telling myself that some souls aren’t meant to be trapped.

Their inner light is just too strong.

And when they break free,

the part of you that knows it was unfair to limit them does cheer.

But still,

the world you stay in is that much more dull and silent that they depart.

Hope is a good thing,

maybe the best of things,

and no good thing ever dies.

Andy told Red that hope could not be locked away.

Prison can take your freedom,

take your time,

take your dignity,

but it cannot take your mind or your choice of spirit.

后面长句中that引导宾语从句;

your mind和your choice of spirit并列作宾语。

Hope is precious, perhaps the most precious thing,

and precious things will never vanish.

Andy said to Red hope cannot be imprisoned.

Prison may rob you of freedom, time and dignity,

yet it can never seize your thoughts or your spiritual decision.

Faith is a warm thing,

maybe the warmest of things,

and no warm thing ever fades.

He told me that faith could not be buried away.

Hardship can take your comfort,

take your chance,

take your praise,

but it cannot take your belief or your pursuit of dream.

He waited patiently for decades,

chipping away at the concrete wall with a tiny rock hammer,

one small piece at a time.

No one believed a man could dig a tunnel out of a prison cell.

Everyone thought it was impossible.

He waited patiently for decades;

one small piece at a time独立结构补充说明。

a man could dig…

省略that。

He waited quietly for many years,

using a small rock hammer to break the concrete wall bit by bit.

Nobody believed a person could dig a tunnel from inside a prison cell.

All people regarded it as impossible.

She persisted calmly for years,

polishing her skills with simple daily practice,

one small progress at a time.

No one believed a girl could reach such great achievements.

Everyone thought it was unreachable.
