The Wind《
拉斯金《The Stones of Venice》
The wind is an invisible traveller,
roaming endlessly across the face of the earth.
It has no fixed shape,
no permanent home to settle in,
yet it touches every corner of the world.
Sometimes it comes as a soft gentle breeze,
brushing lightly over the surface of lakes,
stirring the tender leaves of young saplings,
and carrying the faint fragrance of wild blossoms.
It whispers through grass and hedges,
bringing cool relief under the blazing summer sun.
In this mild form, the wind is a quiet friend,
caressing all living things with tender care.
At other times, it rises into a furious gale.
It roars through mountain valleys,
shakes the sturdy branches of ancient trees,
and stirs up towering waves upon the sea.
It can drive heavy clouds across the sky,
sweep dust across the barren plain,
and remind mankind of nature’s immense power.
In this fierce form, the wind is not our enemy,
but a force that shapes the land for ages.
The wind does not choose where it will go.
It flows over fertile farmlands and rocky wastelands alike.
It blows upon the palace and the humble cottage,
showing no preference for wealth or rank.
It passes by swiftly,
leaving traces that we may easily overlook.
It carries seeds to distant lands,
helping forests expand to new territories.
It purifies stagnant air,
and balances the climate of the whole planet.
Human beings have long watched and learned from the wind.
Sailors depend upon it to cross vast oceans.
Farmers wait for it to dry their harvested grain.
We harness its power to generate clean energy,
turning its endless motion into light for our homes.
Yet no human skill can fully command the wind.
We may learn to use its strength,
but we cannot confine its free spirit.
The wind also holds a symbolic meaning.
It represents freedom that cannot be chained.
It reminds us that many vital things in life
cannot be seen, but can only be felt.
Like thought, faith and inner courage,
their power exists beyond physical sight.
Though unseen, they move and change the world.
We cannot grasp the wind in our hands.
We can only feel its touch,
and observe the marks it leaves behind.
To understand the wind,
we must look not at the wind itself,
but at all things that it moves and stirs.
This truth applies to our life as well:
we often judge things by their outward appearance,
while the most powerful forces remain invisible.
