One morning,

as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams,

he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug.

He lay on his armour-hard back and saw,

as he lifted his head up a little,

his brown, arched abdomen divided up into rigid bow-like sections.

His numerous legs,

pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his bulk,

waved helplessly before his eyes.

What has happened to me?

he thought.

It was no dream.

His room,

an ordinary human bedroom though a little small,

rested quietly within the four familiar walls.

Above the table,

where cloth samples were unpacked and spread out,

hung a picture he had cut from an illustrated magazine

and set in a fine gilt frame.

Gregor worked as a traveling salesman

to support his whole family.

He bore heavy pressure and owed his boss money

for his parents’ long-standing debt.

He hated this tiring job,

which forced him to rush between towns,

catch early trains and eat irregular meals.

He rarely made close friends,

and he kept working only because he hoped

to pay off the debt in five or six years.

After that,

he planned to quit and live for himself.

He glanced at the alarm clock ticking on the chest of drawers,

and a sharp panic rushed over him.

It was far later than he usually got up,

and he would miss the early train for business.

He tried to move his body,

but his new insect form made every simple movement difficult.

He understood clearly that this strange transformation

would break the stable life he had been struggling to maintain.

The whole family depended on his income,

yet he could no longer stand up,

put on his clothes or go out to work.

At first,

his family felt shocked and sympathetic toward him.

They brought food and cleaned his room carefully,

still expecting that Gregor might recover one day.

But as time went by,

the family’s patience wore away little by little.

They grew tired of taking care of a useless bug,

and they gradually regarded him as a heavy burden

that destroyed their peaceful life.

His sister,

once the person who cared for him most,

also began to avoid him and lose her kindness.

This absurd accident exposes the invisible pressure

that crushes ordinary people under a cold, utilitarian life.

It shows how fragile human affection can be,

when it is built on practical value and material dependence.

He understood clearly that this strange transformation

would break the stable life he had been struggling to maintain.

He understood that this strange transformation would break the stable life.

把自我价值绑定在赚钱养家上;

She realized quietly that this sudden failure

would shake the peaceful life she had long tried to protect.

变身前,格里高尔是全家的经济支柱,被家人依靠;

格里高尔透支自我、不停奔波,依靠劳动换取家人安稳与亲情;

中期:

突如其来的异变夺走劳动能力,短暂的同情维持着微弱温情;
