选自约翰·济慈《Ode on a Grecian Urn》《希腊古瓮颂》
Thou still unravish’d bride of quietness,
Thou foster-child of silence and slow time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fring’d legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
What men or gods are these? What maidens loth?
What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear’d,
Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
Though winning near the goal—yet, do not grieve;
She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss,
For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
Ah, happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed
Your leaves, nor ever bid the Spring adieu;
And, happy melodist, unwearied,
For ever piping songs for ever new;
More happy love! more happy, happy love!
For ever warm and still to be enjoy’d,
For ever panting, and for ever young;
All breathing human passion far above,
That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloy’d,
A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.
Who are these coming to the sacrifice?
To what green altar, O mysterious priest,
Lead’st thou that heifer lowing at the skies,
And all her silken flanks with garlands drest?
What little town by river or sea shore,
Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
Is emptied of this folk, this pious morn?
And, little town, thy streets for evermore
Will silent be; and not a soul to tell
Why thou art desolate, can e’er return.
O Attic shape! Fair attitude! with brede
Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
With forest branches and the trodden weed;
Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought
As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say’st,
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”
却更加动人;所以,柔婉的笛管,请继续吹奏;
那些林木,永远不会凋零叶落;
尽管距离目标近在咫尺——但不必悲伤;
叶片,永远不必和春天告别;
永远吹奏常新的乐曲;
永远心跳喘息,永远青春不老;
小城啊,你的街道将永久沉寂;
林间枝丫,踏过的野草缠绕其上;
Thou still unravish’d bride of quietness,
Thou foster-child of silence and slow time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fring’d legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
Thou still unravish’d bride… 、
Thou foster-child… 、
Sylvan historian ,
who canst thus express
more sweetly than our rhyme
What leaf-fring’d legend 为主语, haunts 为谓语;
Of deities or mortals 介词短语作后置定语修饰legend;
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady
The ancient urn is the bride of quietness and child of silence.
Like a historian of woods, it tells a beautiful story sweeter than poems.
What story about gods or men lies on its surface?
Thou untouched mirror of still moonlight,
Thou nursling of calm dusk and slow decay,
Silent recorder, who canst thus recite
A shadowed scene more soft than words can say:
What mist-edged vision lingers on thy glass
Of ghosts or wanderers, or of both,
By rocky shores or valleys far away?
What faint pursuit? What gentle lingering pass?
What whispers faint? What quiet, tender oath?
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear’d,
Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
Though winning near the goal—yet, do not grieve;
She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss,
For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
Not to the sensual ear, but… 使用not…but…
nor ever can those trees be bare nor置于句首,引发句子倒装。
Though winning near the goal
末尾两个 though 引导让步状语从句,层层推进;
For ever wilt thou love
Sounds we can hear are sweet, but imagined music is sweeter.
The carved youth’s song will never end and the carved trees never lose leaves.
The lover can never kiss his beloved,
yet he will always love, and she will stay beautiful forever.
浮雕上的少年永远歌唱,树叶永远繁茂;
Seen roses glow, but those unseen
Bloom brighter still; so, gentle buds, abide;
Not to the gazing eye, but more serene,
Breathe to the soul soft scents that never died:
Sweet maiden, underneath the boughs, thou ne’er
Shalt fade away, nor shall the bloom decline;
Warm wooer, never, never mayst thou share
Her gentle hand—yet, do not repine;
She shall not wilt, though joy can ne’er be thine,
For ever shalt thou hope, and she be fine!
完全复刻but转折分句,not…but平行结构,
本文是济慈五大颂歌名篇《Ode on a Grecian Urn》,

Beauty is truth, truth beauty”,
