I cannot understand how people can contrive to pass their whole lives in labour,
and seem to have no pleasure but in fatigue.
I like to lie in bed and think of nothing;
to lounge in an armchair and read a book without making any effort to understand it;
to look out of the window and watch the clouds drift across the sky,
and listen to the wind sighing among the trees.
There is a luxury in being idle,
which those who are always busy can never know.
They are always in a hurry,
always anxious,
always trying to get something done.
They have no time to enjoy the world,
no time to dream,
no time simply to exist.
It is not idleness that is the root of all evil,
but restless, unsatisfied craving.
The man who does nothing but chase gain or fame
can never know peace of mind.
To sit still and let your thoughts wander freely,
to watch nature unfold before your eyes,
this is not waste of time.
It is gathering strength for the soul.
我喜欢躺在床上,什么都不去想;
斜靠扶手椅上翻书,不必费力读懂字句;
I cannot understand how people can contrive to pass their whole lives in labour,
and seem to have no pleasure but in fatigue.
和 (can) seem。
I cannot understand how people spend all their lives working
and find pleasure only in tiredness.
My spirit sighs, and a soft faint weariness weighs
My mind, as though of sleepy herbs I had drunk,
Or sipped some mild potion to the dregs
A moment gone, and dream-bound had sunk:
‘Tis not through resentment of thy peaceful fate,
But being too moved by thy gentle quiet,—
That thou, soft-winged spirit of the air,
In some sweet silent space
Of leafy shade, and breezes measureless,
Singest of spring in calm and careless grace.
There is a luxury in being idle,
which those who are always busy can never know.
本句是there be句型。
Being idle has a special delight,
and busy people can never know it.
