It is not possible to judge rightly of any work of art,

unless we can dismiss from our minds all preconceived opinions.

We do not see the thing as it is,

but as we have been taught to expect it to be.

We bring to every picture, every statue, every building,

a set of ready-made rules,

and praise or blame, not what is there,

but what our rules tell us ought to be there.

We fancy we admire beauty,

while we are only admiring our own notions of beauty.

We look for the kind of form, the kind of colour,

the kind of expression which we have been told to admire,

and pass by, without notice,

the noblest qualities which the work itself possesses.

It is not merely in art that this prejudice prevails.

We carry the same false habit into all our judgments of life.

We do not see men as they are,

but as our theories and traditions say they should be.

We demand from them certain virtues,

and overlook the real virtues they possess.

We expect them to follow fixed patterns of conduct,

and refuse to recognize goodness when it appears in a new form.

Prejudice puts a veil between our eyes and reality.

It shapes our sight before we begin to observe.

The greatest difficulty in all true appreciation,

is to empty our minds of these ready-made judgments,

to lay aside our favourite formulas,

and to look steadily at the thing itself,

accepting what it truly offers,

rather than forcing it to fit our prior assumptions.

To see clearly is a rare gift.

Most people spend their lives looking through borrowed glasses.

These glasses are made of custom, tradition, and popular opinion.

They tint every object we behold.

We think we are judging the world,

but we are only reading the colour of our lenses.

True aesthetic appreciation begins when we remove these lenses.

We must learn to observe quietly,

without rushing to label or classify.

We must let the work of art speak for itself,

and listen before we decide whether it is worthy of praise.

In Ruskin’s age, the industrial revolution swept across Britain.

Mass-produced goods flooded the market,

and public taste was easily shaped by commercial trends.

Many critics relied on old, rigid academic rules to judge art.

They cared more about following established standards,

than feeling the genuine power within each creation.

Ruskin wrote this essay to resist this shallow cultural atmosphere.

He hoped readers could break free from mass stereotypes,

and recover the sincere, direct feeling of art.
