选自约翰·罗斯金《The Stones of Venice》《威尼斯之石》

We have, then, in the first place, to observe that

the great art of all time is the expression of national life.

It is not the product of individual talent alone,

but the slow fruit of the whole nation’s character,

its faith, its labour, its sorrow, and its hope.

The architecture of Venice is no mere play of fancy,

no casual arrangement of marble and colour.

Every carved capital, every moulded arch,

every faded relief upon its walls,

is the true record of the spirit of the men who built it.

The stones of Venice are not dead and cold rock.

They are living pages of history,

faithfully written in pure and noble marble.

In the early and glorious age of Venice,

when the city rose quietly from the misty lagoon,

the ancient workman was never a passive machine.

He thought independently, felt deeply,

and poured his whole sincere soul into every detail.

He possessed full creative freedom in his craft.

He could adjust patterns, change lines,

and follow the inspiration of his own imagination.

He never copied mechanically without thinking.

Every carving bore unique personal emotions and thoughts.

At this stage of history, labour and spirit were perfectly united,

and art was born from the vitality of human creation.

In the middle period of Venice’s development,

with the rapid expansion of maritime trade,

the city accumulated enormous wealth and prosperity.

Luxury gradually flooded every corner of society,

and the simple and sincere folk spirit began to fade away.

A terrible division appeared within the craft industry.

Creative thinking and manual labour were completely separated.

Professional designers were responsible for all planning,

while ordinary workers were only allowed to copy rigid patterns.

Workers lost their independent thinking and creative freedom.

They became rigid tools controlled by fixed rules.

Their hands kept working constantly,

but their minds fell into long-term silence and numbness.

In the later declining stage of Venice,

all architectural ornaments became repetitive and empty.

The warm human temperament completely disappeared from the stone carvings.

Architecture was no longer the expression of national spirit,

but merely a superficial decoration for wealth and vanity.

The artistic decline of buildings

directly reflected the moral decline of the whole nation.

The decay of Venice was never caused by external war alone,

but originated from the internal loss of human creativity and soul.

Ruskin extended the whole life process of Venice

to reflect on the social crisis of his own Victorian era.

The British Industrial Revolution brought huge material progress,

but it also caused severe alienation of labour.

A large number of factory workers repeated monotonous work all day,

completely losing the opportunity of artistic creation and spiritual expression.

Mass production killed the vitality of traditional handicrafts,

and turned vivid human labour into cold mechanical movement.

Ruskin strongly criticized this distorted social phenomenon.

He earnestly advocated the integration of labour and thought,

and insisted that true art must carry the soul of the creator.

He warned all industrialized societies:

a nation that abandons creative labour will eventually lose its spiritual vitality.

前期:纯粹匠心、自由创作、劳动载魂,艺术繁荣;

中期:财富滋生奢靡,劳动与思想割裂,匠心逐步流失;
