选自弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫《A Room of One’s Own》《一间自己的房间》
A woman must have money
and a room of her own
if she is to write fiction.
That is to say,
she must have the material foundation
to support independent thinking
and free creation.
Intellectual freedom depends upon
material things.
Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom.
Throughout the long history of Britain,
women were trapped in endless domestic labour.
They had no private space for quiet thought.
They received little formal education,
and could not own property or earn independent income.
Most women’s ideas were buried in trivial housework,
and their creative impulses faded away silently.
Woolf imagined a fictional sister of Shakespeare,
a girl with equal genius and literary talent.
But this gifted girl was born as a woman.
She was forbidden to learn grammar and rhetoric.
She was forced into marriage at an early age.
No theatre, no publisher would give her a chance.
Her great gift would be destroyed by family pressure and social prejudice.
This sharp contrast reveals the cruel truth of the age:
talent alone cannot produce great works
without material guarantee and spiritual freedom.
In the middle part of the essay,
Woolf turns to review women’s writing history.
For centuries, few women could publish their works.
Those female writers who dared to write
faced mockery, suspicion and unfair judgement.
They had to write secretly in the living room,
interrupted constantly by family affairs.
They could not enjoy a quiet room belonging only to themselves.
Even when they picked up the pen,
they bore heavy social pressure and gender bias.
In the later part of the lecture,
Woolf puts forward her core proposition.
She does not merely fight for women’s right to write.
She advocates for the androgynous mind in creation.
A great writer possesses both masculine and feminine qualities of mind.
He or she can break the boundary of gender thinking,
and reach complete spiritual wholeness.
She reminds women that gaining money and private space
is not the final goal.
The real aim is to obtain the freedom of mind,
to express truth bravely and create sincerely.
Woolf delivered this lecture in 1928.
At that time, British women had just won the right to vote.
But deep-rooted gender prejudice still controlled society.
Women were still economically dependent on men.
Most people still believed women’s place was within the home.
Woolf felt anxious and thoughtful about this situation.
She wanted to break people’s shallow stereotype of female writers.
She criticized the patriarchal society,
which deprived women of property, education and private space.
She called on women to fight for material independence first,
and then pursue spiritual freedom and literary creation.
