The earth seemed unearthly.

We are accustomed to look upon

the shackled ghost of a conquered world,

but here was something monstrous

and free.

The wilderness had patted him on the head.

It had caressed him,

and he had become hollow at the core.

He had stepped over the threshold

of ordinary human virtues,

and wandered deep into the primitive darkness

hidden beneath the surface of civilization.

All the greed, cruelty,

and savage desire buried in human nature

are covered by the elegant mask

of modern civilization.

In the civilized world of order and morality,

people restrain their inner evil,

abide by social rules,

and disguise their selfish desires

with noble slogans and glorious causes.

But when a person is far away

from the restraint of society,

far from the judgment of public opinion,

when he holds absolute power

over other people’s lives and fates,

all the superficial civilization will collapse.

Absolute power erodes conscience.

Without supervision and restraint,

human morality will gradually fade away.

The so-called colonial undertaking,

which was praised as spreading light

and saving primitive races,

is essentially plunder and slaughter

under the name of holiness.

The jungle has no rules,

no moral boundaries,

no civilized constraints.

It exposes the most real side of human nature.

Kurtz lived in the wilderness for a long time,

isolated from civilized society,

holding supreme power alone.

Gradually,

he abandoned all moral discipline,

yielded to his inner greed and madness,

indulged in endless desire and tyranny,

and finally fell into the abyss of darkness

deep in his own heart.

He once possessed noble ideals,

pursued lofty careers,

and dreamed of bringing progress

to the backward land.

Yet in the face of absolute power

and primitive temptation,

his spiritual defense completely collapsed.

The darkness of the jungle

is far less terrifying

than the darkness of the human heart.

The outer wilderness is only physical desolation,

while the inner darkness

is the decay of morality,

the collapse of humanity,

and the distortion of soul.

Every human being

has a hidden heart of darkness.

Civilization is only a thin coat

covering human nature.

Once the coat is torn off,

once the moral restriction fails,

the savage and evil instincts

hidden deep in the soul

will devour reason, conscience and kindness.

History witnesses countless tragedies.

All brutal conquests and violent plunders

are born from the uncontrolled darkness

of human hearts.

True civilization does not lie in

external pompous slogans,

but in the inner restraint of humanity,

the persistence of conscience,

and the eternal vigilance against evil.

是人类贪婪与欲望的极致宣泄;
