Every young heart
will hold a pure and burning adoration.
It rises quietly in the dull grey days,
like a faint flame flickering
amid the shadowed lanes of the city.
The boy lives in a quiet street of Dublin,
surrounded by worn houses and monotonous routines.
The days drag on slowly,
filled with schoolwork, trivial family chores,
and the endless noise of ordinary life.
His world is narrow and colourless,
until the sister of his friend
enters his inner thoughts.
He does not speak to her often.
He only watches her secretly,
noticing the gentle movement of her figure,
the tone of her voice,
and the simple words she says.
This quiet admiration
becomes the only bright spot
within his tedious daily existence.
He imagines her as something pure and distant,
far above the triviality around him.
When she mentions the bazaar named Araby,
and says she cannot attend it,
the boy makes a firm promise.
He will go to Araby,
find a fine gift for her,
and prove the sincerity hidden in his heart.
From that moment on,
all his attention clings to this promise.
He loses interest in his lessons,
pays no heed to the conversation of family members,
and can hardly wait for the night of the bazaar.
Araby is no longer merely a market.
In his youthful imagination,
it turns into a splendid land of wonder,
a sacred space for his adoration.
It represents beauty, romance,
and the realisation of his youthful dream.
He waits impatiently through the long day.
His uncle forgets his promise,
and comes home late at night.
When the boy finally sets out,
the sky has turned dark,
and most of the stalls have already closed.
The hall grows quiet and empty.
Few vendors remain,
and only faint light lingers in the dim space.
He walks among the deserted counters,
observing the trivial bargaining
and shallow conversation of the people there.
The glamour he imagined
has completely vanished.
Araby is nothing more
than an ordinary commercial bazaar,
cold and hollow,
without any trace of romance or holiness.
A sudden epiphany sweeps over him.
He understands the vanity of his fantasy.
His adoration is built upon illusion,
and the splendid bazaar in his mind
never truly existed.
His expectation collapses entirely,
and bitter humiliation rises in his heart.
The boy’s disillusionment
is not merely the disappointment
of failing to buy a gift.
It marks the end of naive youth.
Childhood vision paints the world
with exaggerated beauty and romance,
yet real life is plain, dull and unromantic.
The moment of awakening
forces him to cast aside innocent fantasy,
and face the bare reality of the adult world.
Joyce writes this brief story
to capture a universal transition of youth.
Young people often project noble beauty
onto people and things around them,
creating a perfect illusion
separated from real existence.
When illusion collides with reality,
the dream shatters,
and the young soul tastes the first pain
of disenchantment.
This painful awakening
is an inevitable step
on the path toward maturity.
