I heartily accept the motto, “That government is best which governs least.”
Government is at best merely an expedient tool created by citizens.
It gains power from the majority,
not because the majority holds the truth,
but because it has greater physical strength.
When the government supports unjust systems,
such as slavery and the unfair Mexican-American War,
its laws become immoral.
Thoreau states that the primary duty of every citizen
is to follow his own conscience,
rather than obey laws blindly.
If a law forces people to become participants in injustice,
people have the moral right to break this law peacefully.
Thoreau’s essay comes from his personal experience.
In 1846, he refused to pay the poll tax
to protest slavery and the Mexican War.
As a result, he was arrested and spent one night in jail.
This brief imprisonment inspired him
to reflect deeply on the relationship between individuals and government.
He argues that voting and peaceful petitions
cannot quickly remove social evils.
True reform requires people
to refuse to cooperate with unjust institutions.
People should not wait for the majority to wake up;
honest men should take action
to stop injustice with their own lives.
Thoreau does not advocate violent revolution.
His idea of civil disobedience is non-violent resistance.
He does not aim to destroy the government immediately.
Instead, he hopes to awaken the public conscience
by refusing to participate in evil.
A just man cannot serve an unjust state.
If a government imprisons righteous people
for sticking to moral principles,
then prison becomes the proper place for the just.
One person who stands firm for truth
can be a majority of one.
His individual protest can send a powerful message to society.
The essay challenges the common belief
that citizens must always obey the law.
Society tends to require individuals
to sacrifice personal conscience for the will of the majority.
But Thoreau insists that morality is higher than legislation.
Human conscience is the final standard to judge right and wrong.
The majority may make laws according to their own interests,
yet majority power does not equal justice.
This work has far-reaching influence in world history.
It later inspired famous non-violent movements
led by Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
It provides theoretical foundation for people
to resist unfair policies without violence.
人们不必坐等多数人觉醒;
I heartily accept the motto, “That government is best which governs least.”
Government is at best merely an expedient tool created by citizens.
I fully agree with the saying that the best government interferes the least.
Government is only a useful instrument made by people.
I deeply believe in the principle, “That rule is best which restrains least.”
Rules are in the end only practical devices designed for people.
He argues that voting and peaceful petitions cannot quickly remove social evils.
True reform requires people to refuse to cooperate with unjust institutions.
that引导宾语从句作argues宾语;
He claims that ballots and appeals cannot eliminate social injustice rapidly.
Real change demands people to stop supporting unfair systems.
He holds that speeches and public appeals cannot end social harm completely.
Real progress calls on people to break away from unfair systems.
