Call me Ishmael.

Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—

having little or no money in my purse,

and nothing particular to interest me on shore,

I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world.

It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation.

Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth;

whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul;

I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.

The novel centers on Captain Ahab,

the obsessive commander of the whaling ship Pequod.

Ahab lost one of his legs in a violent encounter with Moby Dick,

a gigantic white sperm whale.

He regards the whale as the symbol of all evil in the universe.

He swears to hunt down and destroy Moby Dick at any cost,

even if the pursuit ruins the whole voyage and endangers every sailor aboard.

The crew set sail under Ahab’s mad command.

Most men are ordinary workers who only seek wages,

while a few men realize the captain’s obsession will lead them to disaster.

Ishmael, the narrator, joins the whaling journey as a new hand.

He witnesses the captain’s growing madness day by day.

He observes the complicated relationships among sailors

from different races and cultures on the ship.

The story mixes detailed knowledge about whaling industry,

philosophical debate about good and evil,

and tense adventure scenes of ocean hunts.

Ahab ignores warnings from his first mate Starbuck,

who tries to persuade him to abandon the useless revenge.

Starbuck believes Ahab’s blind hatred violates reason and morality.

In the final chase, Moby Dick attacks the Pequod.

The whale destroys the ship and drowns nearly all the crew.

Only Ishmael survives,

floating on a coffin until he is rescued.

He lives to tell the tragic story of Ahab and his doomed pursuit.

The tale explores humanity’s endless desire

to fight against mysterious forces of nature.

It questions whether human beings

can fully understand or control the wild world.

每当我嘴角变得阴郁沉重;

每当我的灵魂如同潮湿阴雨的十一月;

Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth;

whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul;

I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.

两个whenever引导时间状语从句,并列使用,用来渲染情绪;

主句中it作形式宾语,真正宾语是后面不定式to get to sea;

When I feel depressed and gloomy,

I think I should go to sea without delay.

Whenever I feel trapped by noisy daily matters;

whenever heavy confusion fills my mind;

I find it necessary to seek quietness as soon as I can.

He regards the whale as the symbol of all evil in the universe.

He swears to hunt down and destroy Moby Dick at any cost,

even if the pursuit ruins the whole voyage and endangers every sailor aboard.

主句谓语regard … as …;

第二句主句之后,even if引导让步状语从句;

He sees the whale as the representation of universal wickedness.

He promises to kill Moby Dick no matter what price he must pay,

even if the quest destroys the trip and threatens all sailors.

She regards the barrier as the sign of all difficulties in her life.

She determines to break through the obstacle at any cost,

even if the struggle wastes her energy and hurts people around her.
