(The American Scholar),
The American Scholar is regarded as America’s intellectual declaration of independence.
The speech was delivered at Harvard University in 1837.
At that time, American culture had long remained a follower of European civilization.
Most American scholars admired European writers and ancient classics,
and they tended to copy European ideas
instead of observing their own land and people.
Emerson saw this cultural dependency as a hidden barrier.
He called on American intellectuals to break away from blind worship of European traditions
and form native thinking rooted in American reality.
Emerson defines the scholar’s functions from three sources: nature, books and action.
First, nature is the first teacher of the scholar.
Human minds and nature share the same origin.
By observing the natural world,
the scholar can discover universal laws and awaken inner insight.
Second, books serve as records of past great minds.
Books are meant to inspire rather than to control thought.
Readers should not become bookworms who passively accept every word.
Reading should fuel new ideas instead of replacing independent thinking.
Third, action is essential for scholars.
Thought without practice is incomplete.
Only through real life experience can ideas become solid and vivid.
Action offers raw materials for intellectual reflection.
Emerson criticizes the divided image of scholars in his age.
Society separated thinkers from practical workers.
Some scholars lived in isolated studies, far away from ordinary life.
He argues that the true scholar is “Man Thinking”,
not a mere book-reader.
The scholar should be active in society,
observe the lives of ordinary Americans,
and speak for the nation.
He must dare to think freely
and refuse to obey old opinions just because they are widely accepted.
The scholar also has moral responsibilities.
He should maintain self-trust,
resist social prejudice,
and keep independent judgment.
The scholar’s task is to cheer people up,
to remind mankind of its potential greatness.
Emerson believes that once American scholars stop copying Europe
and explore their own national experience,
America will produce original literature and wisdom.
This speech expressed the strong demand of Transcendentalists for spiritual independence.
It encouraged later generations of American writers to create native works
and build American cultural identity.
