The founders of a new colony,

whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness they might originally project,

have invariably recognized it among their earliest practical necessities

to allot a portion of the virgin soil as a cemetery,

and another portion as the site of a prison.

It may be safely assumed,

that the forefathers of Boston built the first prison-house

somewhere on the outskirts of the town.

Hester Prynne is led out of the prison,

holding her infant daughter Pearl in her arms.

She is forced to wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest,

the mark of her adultery,

and stand on the scaffold for public humiliation.

Her husband, Roger Chillingworth,

who was captured by Native Americans and long missing,

returns to Boston and sees her shame.

He swears to find out who Hester’s secret lover is

and take cruel revenge on that man.

Arthur Dimmesdale, the young respected minister,

is the hidden father of Pearl.

He is trapped in endless guilt and inner torment,

but he dares not confess his sin to the public.

Chillingworth suspects Dimmesdale’s secret,

and moves in to live with him,

slowly torturing the minister’s mind day after day.

Hester’s courage and kindness gradually change people’s opinions.

Many townsfolk begin to regard the “A” not as adultery,

but as “Able”, meaning capable.

At last, Dimmesdale mounts the scaffold with Hester and Pearl.

He confesses his crime before all townspeople,

and reveals the hidden mark upon his own chest.

He dies in Hester’s arms after the confession.

Chillingworth loses the object of his revenge

and fades away soon afterwards.

Hester chooses to stay in New England,

still wearing the scarlet letter,

waiting for a time when people can judge sin with mercy.

The story explores human sin, guilt, secrecy and redemption.

The founders of a new colony,

whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness they might originally project,

have invariably recognized it among their earliest practical necessities

to allot a portion of the virgin soil as a cemetery,

and another portion as the site of a prison.

whatever引导让步状语从句,作为插入语分隔主句主语与谓语;

主句中it作形式宾语,真正宾语是后面不定式to allot…;

The settlers of the new settlement,

no matter what ideal society they planned at first,

always considered it necessary

to set aside land for graves

and a place for a jail.

The builders of a new community,

whatever perfect world of peace and trust they might originally imagine,

have always found it among their basic demands

to reserve a space for solving conflicts,

and another space for healing wounds.

He swears to find out who Hester’s secret lover is

and take cruel revenge on that man.

主句谓语swear后面接并列不定式to find out… and (to) take…;

who引导宾语从句,作find out的宾语;

He promises to discover who Hester’s hidden partner is

and carry out harsh revenge on him.

She vows to discover who spread the false rumor

and get fair justice for the harmed person.
