Above all was the sense of hearing acute.
I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth.
I heard many things in hell.
How, then, am I mad?
Hearken! and observe how healthily—
how calmly I can tell you the whole story.
It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain;
but once conceived, it haunted me day and night.
Object there was none.
Passion there was none.
I loved the old man.
He had never wronged me.
He had never given me insult.
For his gold I had no desire.
I think it was his eye!
Yes, it was this!
One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture—
a pale blue eye, with a film over it.
Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold;
and so very slowly I made up my mind
to take the life of the old man,
and free myself of the eye forever.
Every night about midnight,
I turned the latch of his door and opened it so gently.
I put in a dark lantern with no light shining out,
then I thrust my head carefully into the room.
I did this for seven long nights,
but I always found the eye closed,
so I could not do the work.
On the eighth night,
I opened the door more cautiously than ever.
The old man woke up and asked who was there.
I kept still and said nothing.
I knew how the terrified old man felt in the dark.
He sat there listening,
waiting for unknown danger in the silent night.
Suddenly I heard a low, dull, quick sound,
the beating of the old man’s heart.
It grew louder and louder every moment.
Driven by overwhelming anxiety and rage,
I rushed into the room and killed the old man.
After the murder,
I cut off his limbs and hid his body under the floorboards.
At four o’clock in the morning,
three policemen came to check the house.
I talked freely and confidently with them,
believing my crime was perfectly hidden.
Yet the ringing sound of the heart beating returned.
It became increasingly loud and unbearable.
I could bear the hypocritical silence no longer.
I screamed out my crime,
admitting that the beating heart under the floor betrayed me.
我说不清这个念头最初是如何钻进我的脑海;
每当这只眼睛望向我,我便浑身血液冰凉;
It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain;
but once conceived, it haunted me day and night.
It作形式主语,真正主语是后面不定式to say…;
how引导宾语从句,作say的宾语;
完整为once the idea was conceived;
I cannot explain how the crazy thought came into my mind,
but it troubled me all the time after it appeared.
It is hard to tell how the strange obsession took root in my mind;
but once formed, it disturbed me day and night.
Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold;
and so very slowly I made up my mind
to take the life of the old man,
and free myself of the eye forever.
whenever引导时间状语从句,渲染持续的心理压迫;
主句包含并列不定式to take… and (to) free…作目的状语;
Every time the strange eye stared at me, I felt terrified;
thus I gradually decided to kill the old man
to completely get rid of my inner fear.
Whenever the strange shadow appeared before me, my heart sank;
and so little by little I made up my mind
to break away from the past pain,
and free myself from endless anxiety forever.
