Most ordinary people tend to beautify war with romance,
honor and heroic legend.
They regard the battlefield
as a sacred stage for brave soldiers to win glory and fame.
In fact, real war is never splendid or romantic.
It is an ugly, cruel and exhausting trial.
It is filled with fear, hunger, chaos and accidental luck.
Set in the fierce Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885,
the story centers on Raina Petkoff, a young
and romantic noble girl in Bulgaria.
She is deeply immersed in romantic poems and heroic stories.
She holds an extremely idealized view of both war and love.
She adores her fiancé Sergius Saranoff,
who leads a famous cavalry charge in the war.
In her eyes, Sergius is a perfect,
noble and undefeated war hero.
Their engagement is a holy love blessed by war and glory.
One rainy night,
a fugitive enemy soldier breaks into Raina’s bedroom.
He is Captain Bluntschli, a calm,
experienced and pragmatic Swiss mercenary.
Different from those passionate, glory-chasing soldiers,
he treats war merely as a tough occupation instead of a romantic adventure.
Surprisingly, he fills his gun holster with chocolates rather than bullets.
For he firmly believes that food
and physical strength are more essential for survival.
He frankly tells Raina the cold truth.
Sergius’s magnificent victory is not due to bravery, but pure accident.
The enemy failed to fight back simply because they ran out of ammunition.
Shocked and confused,
Raina chooses to shelter and protect the exhausted fugitive.
After the war ends, Sergius returns home
and is warmly welcomed as a national hero.
However, as Raina gradually contacts real life and meets Bluntschli again,
she thoroughly recognizes the falsity
and vanity of Sergius’s romantic performance.
Sergius’s so-called heroism is nothing but a pompous and empty show.
He soon grows tired of his noble lover and falls in love with the smart,
genuine servant Louka.
Gradually, Raina abandons her naive romantic fantasy.
She is deeply attracted by Bluntschli’s honesty,
rationality and down-to-earth personality.
At last, Raina bravely breaks off her glamorous but illusory engagement.
Sergius also gives up his hypocritical heroic mask and chooses ordinary love.
Shaw skillfully uses this witty comedy to completely dismantle
the false romance of war and the blind idealization of love.
