I confess that when first I made acquaintance with Charles Strickland,

I never for a moment discerned that there was in him anything out of the ordinary.

He was a quiet, reserved man,

leading a regular and decent life as a London stockbroker.

He had a gentle wife,

two lovely children,

a stable career and a comfortable home.

In the eyes of the world,

he possessed every blessing that ordinary people spend their whole lives pursuing.

To all appearances,

his life was perfect and flawless.

He attended social gatherings with his wife,

took care of his family,

and behaved politely in public.

No one could have imagined

that beneath his dull and mediocre appearance,

burned an irresistible passion for art.

He felt suffocated by the trivial repetition of daily life,

by the trivial disputes of family life,

and by the rigid and boring secular rules.

When he was nearly forty years old,

an age when most people choose to settle for stability,

Strickland suddenly abandoned everything.

He left his loving wife and innocent children without hesitation,

gave up his stable job and wealthy life,

and went to Paris alone to pursue painting.

He endured extreme poverty,

suffered from hunger and cold,

lived in shabby rooms,

and cut off all connections with the secular world he once belonged to.

He cared nothing for fame and fortune,

ignored worldly judgment and gossip,

and endured loneliness and hardship in silence.

Most people struggle all their lives

to pick up the sixpence on the ground,

to satisfy material desires and secular responsibilities.

But Strickland chose to look up at the bright moon in the dark night,

chasing the purest dream deep in his soul.

He knew clearly that

the road of ideal pursuit was destined to be lonely and rough.

He sacrificed marriage, family, wealth and reputation,

just to complete the artistic redemption of his inner self.

Even when he was seriously ill and facing death,

he still insisted on creating paintings in the remote and primitive island.

He burned all his masterpieces before his death,

not for the appreciation of the world,

but for the faithful dedication to his own heart.

Most people struggle all their lives

to pick up the sixpence on the ground,

to satisfy material desires and secular responsibilities.

But Strickland chose to look up at the bright moon in the dark night,

chasing the purest dream deep in his soul.

People pursue material life, while Strickland pursues spiritual dreams.

塑造人人艳羡的安稳生活底色;

抛弃一切世俗羁绊奔赴艺术理想;

渐渐遗忘抬头仰望星空的初心;

Most people rush all their days

to chase the trivial gains in life,

to settle mortal worries and worldly routines.

But the brave choose to gaze at the distant stars in the vast sky,

guarding the sincerest faith hidden deep in their hearts.

sixpence 六便士 = 世俗物质、安稳生活、人间烟火、平庸现实;

众人低头谋生的平庸 VS 主角抬头追梦的赤诚;

世俗安稳的圆满表象 VS 灵魂空虚的内在荒芜;

人人争抢的物质红利 VS 无人理解的孤独理想;

六便士是生存,是责任,是世人离不开的人间烟火;
