The Count of Monte Cristo《

There is neither happiness nor misery in the world;

there is only the comparison of one state with another,

nothing more.

He who has felt the deepest grief

is best able to experience supreme happiness.

We must have felt what it is to die,

that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living.

Live, then,

and be happy,

beloved children of my heart,

and never forget,

that until the day when God shall deign to reveal the future to man,

all human wisdom is summed up in these two words:

“Wait and hope.”

I have seen the most innocent man dragged down by treachery and envy,

locked away in darkness,

robbed of love,

robbed of freedom,

robbed of every gentle joy that makes life sweet.

I learned in that cold dungeon,

where the light of the sun never reached,

that time can break a weak man,

but it can also forge a soul of iron.

Suffering is the stone on which the spirit is tempered.

Many men seek quick revenge,

they rush to strike,

to pour out anger the moment they are wronged.

But true justice does not hurry.

The sea does not swallow its prey the instant a wrong is done.

It waits,

it flows silently,

it gathers its strength beneath the calm surface.

So too the man who has endured wrongs must wait,

watch,

and choose his moment wisely.

Yet revenge alone cannot fill the hollow of a wounded heart.

I once thought vengeance was the only cure for my pain.

I believed that to see my enemies fall

would heal every scar left by years in the tomb.

I was mistaken.

The heart that feeds only on hatred

will grow empty,

even when its foes lie defeated.

Hope is the brighter gift,

the quiet light that keeps us standing

when all other lights have gone out.

Do not mistake patience for cowardice.

To wait is not to surrender.

To hope is not to pretend evil does not exist.

It is to trust that there is an order beyond our small sight,

that wrongs do not vanish forever uncounted,

and that joy may return,

even after the longest,

blackest night.

译文

世上本无所谓幸福,也无所谓不幸;

He who has felt the deepest grief

is best able to experience supreme happiness.

We must have felt what it is to die,

that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living.

He is best able to experience supreme happiness。

第二句中what it is to die是宾语从句,that引导目的状语,等同于so that,

Those who have suffered greatly can understand true happiness.

We need to know suffering so we can value life’s pleasures.

很多受害者被愤怒裹挟,一心只求立刻报复,最后被仇恨吞噬自我;

全书层层递进:先是埃德蒙被陷害入狱,承受极致苦难;

He who has endured long loneliness

is best able to cherish sincere company.

We must have known the weight of loss,

that we may treasure every warm moment we own.

大仲马承认世间存在阴谋、陷害与不公,无辜之人会坠入苦难深渊,苦难足以摧毁普通人;

依然克制怒火,守住心底的希望;
