Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.

It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive,

and for a while I could not enter,

for the way was barred to me.

There was a padlock and a chain upon the gate.

I called in my dream to the lodge-keeper,

and had no answer,

and peering through the rusted bars

I saw that the lodge was empty,

the windows gaping,

the roof crumpled.

Then, like all dreamers,

I was possessed of a sudden with supernatural powers

and passed like a spirit through the barrier before me.

The drive wound away in front of me,

twisting and turning as it had always done,

but as I advanced I was aware that a change had come upon it.

It was short and overgrown,

no longer the smooth drive we had known.

The soft mist crept along the ground,

and wrapped itself about my feet.

The trees came down close,

their branches interlocking overhead,

forming a dark tunnel.

Sometimes the drive would vanish altogether beneath wild bracken and bramble.

And then Manderley came into view.

Manderley, secretive and silent as it had always been.

The stone façade stared back at me in the pale dream-light.

Slowly I drew near,

and I saw that the house was a shell,

blackened and bare.

No smoke curled from the chimneys,

no windows glowed warm.

The garden was wild,

the roses that once bloomed in abundance choked by weeds.

The peace that had once belonged to Manderley was gone forever.

Rebecca’s shadow still lingered in every corner of this place,

even after fire had eaten the walls.

I knew then that I would never return in waking life.

Manderley belonged to the past,

locked away behind memory and regret.

No second chance could bring back the old days,

no apology could erase the secrets buried here.

We had fled from this house,

carrying the heavy weight of its hidden truth.

The dead woman whose name hung over every room

would never fade away completely.

She was not a ghost walking the corridors,

but a memory,

a standard,

a quiet fear that settled inside the heart of anyone who came after her.

Maxim and I could build a new life far away,

yet the spell of Manderley would stay with us always.

The dead woman whose name hung over every room

would never fade away completely.

She was not a ghost walking the corridors,

but a memory,

a standard,

a quiet fear that settled inside the heart of anyone who came after her.

not…but…

The dead woman would not fade away.

She was a memory and a hidden fear instead of a ghost.

The old dream whose shadow hung over every quiet night

would not disappear at once.

It was not a storm sweeping the window,

but a longing,

a regret,

a soft unease that stays within anyone who once cherished it.

复刻定语从句+not…but…

短句勾勒画面,直白有冲击力;

曼德利庄园=承载秘密、执念与过往记忆的内心世界;

昔日繁花温暖的庄园 VS 大火之后焦黑荒芜的废墟;

看得见的鬼魂 VS 看不见的记忆枷锁;
