A single knoll rises out of the plain in Oklahoma,

north and west of the Wichita Range.

For my people,

the Kiowas,

it is an old landmark,

and I know it well.

I have been there many times in my life.

I first saw it when I was a child,

and I have returned to it again and again through the years.

There is a quiet magic in that place,

a depth of memory that belongs only to those who carry the blood and history of the tribe.

Rainy Mountain is not merely a geographical spot on the map.

It is the spiritual home of the Kiowa nation,

the final resting place of their traditions,

their struggles,

and their fading way of life.

The land around it is open and endless,

stretching far into the horizon,

bare and beautiful under the vast sky.

The wind moves freely across the grassland,

carrying with it the faint echoes of ancient chants,

of warriors’ journeys,

and of generations who once lived in harmony with this wild land.

As I stand upon the knoll and look out over the open country,

I am overwhelmed by a profound sense of belonging and loss.

I can trace the long journey of my ancestors across the Great Plains.

I can feel the hardship of their migrations,

the glory of their reign on the southern plains,

and the sorrow of their final surrender to the United States government.

The Kiowas were once a powerful, free, and proud people,

roaming thousands of miles of open territory,

governed by their own beliefs and sacred laws.

They cherished freedom above all things,

and their entire existence was tied closely to the rhythm of nature and the land.

Yet history moved forward cruelly and inevitably.

The expansion of modern civilization swept across the American frontier,

crushing the ancient tribal order that had stood for centuries.

Traditional hunting grounds were seized,

ancient rituals were forbidden,

old languages gradually faded from daily life,

and the once-vigorous tribal culture slowly declined.

Many old ways were lost forever,

buried beneath the progress and transformation of a new era.

In this journey back to Rainy Mountain,

I do not merely revisit a place.

I revisit my origin,

my ancestral memory,

and the disappearing soul of my nation.

The mountain stands unchanged,

silent and eternal,

witnessing the rise and fall of a civilization.

It holds all the joy and grief of the Kiowa people,

preserving the dignity of a nation that once ruled the plains.

To walk the way to Rainy Mountain

is to walk through time,

to reconcile the past with the present,

and to preserve the precious spiritual heritage that modern society tends to ignore.

Though the old tribal life has vanished from the world,

the memory of the land never dies.

The blood,

the faith,

and the ancestral spirit

continue to live within every descendant.

Rainy Mountain remains as an everlasting spiritual symbol,

reminding future generations of their root,

their identity,

and the unbreakable bond between humanity and nature.
