I had a farm in Africa,

at the foot of the Ngong Hills.

The Equator runs across these highlands,

a hundred miles to the North,

and the farm lay at an altitude of over six thousand feet.

In the daytime you felt that you had got high up,

near to the sun,

but the early mornings and the evenings were cool and peaceful.

The location gave a singular light and colour to the landscape.

Africa does not dazzle the eye like tropical lowlands.

The air here is dry and thin,

and the colours have a muted, noble quality.

The mountains of Ngong stand with gentle grandeur,

their blue contours shifting softly with the changing light.

The grassland stretches outward,

dotted with thorn trees,

their flat crowns shaped like dark umbrellas against the sky.

Wild animals wander freely across this land:

zebras and gazelles graze upon the open plains,

and in the distance the lion keeps watch over his territory.

The Kikuyu people lived on my farm,

tending the soil,

herding cattle,

following customs older than the written records of the world.

They were bound to this land by ancient bonds,

born of countless generations rooted within the hills.

I came to Africa with hopes of running a coffee plantation.

For years I rose before dawn,

riding out to inspect the fields,

to speak with my workers,

to learn the rhythm of the land.

I learned to read the signs of the sky:

the coming of the long rains,

the drought that parched the earth,

the quiet winds that carried news across the valley.

The farm became more than an enterprise.

It became my home,

my teacher,

and the place where my innermost thoughts took shape.

I lived alongside the wilderness,

and slowly,

the wilderness entered into me.

But the fortunes of the farm began to fail.

Coffee prices fell steeply in the world market,

the harvests suffered from unpredictable weather,

and the burden of debt grew heavier year by year.

At last there was no way forward.

I must sell the farm,

leave the highlands,

and turn my back upon all that I had loved.

This departure was not merely leaving a house or a business.

It meant parting from a whole world of being,

from the quiet companionship of hills and beasts,

from the lives of the people who had shared my days.

When I knew that I must go,

I began to look upon everything with a different gaze.

I saw that Africa herself would remain,

long after I was gone.

The hills would catch the morning light,

the grass would sway in the wind,

the wild creatures would move across the plains,

and the Kikuyu would continue their lives upon the soil.

The land does not belong to those who stay for a season.

It belongs to itself,

enduring beyond the brief span of any human life.

Human beings are only passing visitors,

temporary guests within its vast, unhurried kingdom.

I carried away no land,

no trees,

no wild creatures with me.

What Africa gave me could not be packed into trunks or loaded on carts.

It gave me a vision of stillness and freedom,

a sense of proportion before the grandeur of nature.

It taught me that sorrow and beauty often walk side by side,

that loss may leave behind a deeper kind of possession.

I have written this account not to hold on to the farm,

but to honour the truth I learned there:

we do not own the wild world.

We may be blessed to live within it for a while,

to see it,

to love it,

and to carry its memory forever in our soul.

The land does not belong to those who stay for a season.

It belongs to itself,

enduring beyond the brief span of any human life.

Human beings are only passing visitors,

temporary guests within its vast, unhurried kingdom.

who引导定语从句修饰先行词those;

The land is not owned by short-term residents.

The land outlives human beings, and humans are merely passing guests.

The sea does not belong to those who sail for a while.

It belongs to itself,

rolling beyond the narrow years of any human story.

We are only wandering travellers,

brief witnesses inside its boundless, timeless realm.

非洲高地 = 永恒自在的自然本体;

农场 = 人短暂的尘世寄托;

人类短暂的经营与生命 VS 大地亘古长存;

想要占有、留住美好的执念 VS 记忆层面的永恒拥有;

物质层面的失去,未必代表彻底失去;

在宏大的自然面前,人应当保有谦卑;
