If I were not an Englishman,

I think I would be a citizen of Ruritania.

There is a strange, soft charm in that old land,

a quiet glamour that clings to its green hills,

deep forests and slow winding rivers.

I set out on my journey with no grand purpose,

merely hoping to escape the dull routine of my life in England,

to wander and see something new.

I had read tales of Ruritania,

a small kingdom hidden away in the heart of Europe,

and I longed to witness the coronation of King Rudolf the Fifth.

When I first stepped into the capital city of Strelsau,

I was struck by its old-world beauty.

Banners hung from ancient stone buildings,

crowds filled the streets,

and everyone was talking excitedly about their new king.

But I soon met a man named Colonel Sapt,

one of the king’s most loyal servants.

He stared at me in shock,

for I bore an astonishing likeness to King Rudolf.

Our faces, our height,

even the way we carried ourselves were nearly identical.

Disaster came swiftly.

On the night before the coronation,

the king was tricked and kidnapped by his wicked younger brother, Duke Michael.

He was locked away inside the grim, strong castle of Zenda,

held as a prisoner in his own kingdom.

Without their king,

the coronation would fail,

and Duke Michael would seize the throne and rule over Ruritania.

In desperate haste,

Sapt begged me to take the king’s place.

I hesitated at first,

for this was a dangerous game.

If my disguise was uncovered,

death would be my certain fate.

Yet I could not bring myself to abandon an innocent king to ruin.

So I put on the royal robes and walked out before the cheering crowds.

I sat through the coronation ceremony,

spoke with nobles and diplomats,

and played the part of their king.

Day after day,

I lived this double life.

By daylight,

I was the king of Ruritania;

after dark,

Sapt and I made secret plans to rescue the real ruler from the tower in Zenda.

Many times I stood face to face with Duke Michael and his cruel followers.

They watched me closely,

searching for any sign that I was an impostor.

Fear sat heavy in my chest,

but I kept my calm and never let my secret slip.

I did not do this for gold,

nor for the glitter and glory of a crown.

Power held no real attraction for me.

I acted only for honour,

for loyalty,

and for the promise I had made to Sapt.

I knew all along that this throne was never mine.

My task was only to buy time,

to keep Michael from taking control,

until we could free King Rudolf and return him safely to his people.

我是鲁里塔尼亚的国王;

描绘国度风情,铺垫平静美好的开局;
