What error drives our eyes and ears amiss?
Until I know this sure uncertainty,
I’ll entertain the offered fallacy.
Between Syracuse and Ephesus lies a bitter old feud.
The law says any Syracusan who steps into Ephesus
must pay a heavy fine or face the cold sentence of death.
It is under this cruel rule that the merchant Egeon takes his breath.
Years ago, a raging storm crushed his ship upon the sea.
His wife, his twin boys, his whole world broke free.
He had two pairs of twins, a sight both strange and rare.
Two young masters named Antipholus,
two servants called Dromio with care.
Half were swept away into the dark and endless tide.
The rest stayed with him, grief as his constant guide.
Thirty long years he wandered, searching coast to coast.
Hoping one day to find the loved ones he had lost most.
At last he dared to enter Ephesus, though danger waited there.
Guards caught him quickly, and he stood before the Duke’s cold stare.
While Egeon awaited judgement, another story took its flight.
One Antipholus, with his own Dromio, came into this city of light.
He left home to seek his missing kin across the distant land.
But in this very town lived another Antipholus, grand and bland.
Beside him stood his own twin Dromio, same face, same quick reply.
No man could tell which was which, no witness could supply
a single mark to split the twins, to set the confusion right.
And so the great game of mistaken identity took flight.
A wife called Adriana waited for her husband at the door.
When the wandering Antipholus passed by, she ran to implore.
She pulled him home, she chided him for staying out too late.
The stranger stood bewildered, trapped inside this strange fate.
His Dromio met the other master, got ordered here and there.
Beaten for tasks he never knew, wrapped in tangled care.
Shopkeepers ran to claim their gold for goods they thought they sold.
Friends called with warm embraces, stories that never were told.
Every street held a new trap, every turn a fresh surprise.
The wandering pair grew terrified, doubting their own eyes.
They wondered if the whole town fell under some magic spell.
If every face they met was false, if truth had gone to hell.
Yet as the sun climbed high and fell, the puzzle slowly cleared.
The Duke heard Egeon’s sad tale, and every secret appeared.
One by one the missing kin stepped into the open square.
Twin met twin, heart met heart, and grief turned into care.
The chains of false perception broke, the fog began to lift.
All tangled threads of error found their proper gift.
Laughter rolled across the crowd, loud, bright, and sweet.
Long separated families at last got to meet.
What began as blind confusion, mix‑up, fear and strife.
Bloomed into a precious moment of reunited life.

What error drives our eyes and ears amiss?
Until I know this sure uncertainty,
I’ll entertain the offered fallacy.
由连词 Until(直到……才)引导时间状语从句;
主句 I’ll entertain…
What mistake confuses our sight and hearing?
I will accept this puzzle until I find the truth.
原句二
It is under this cruel rule that the merchant Egeon takes his breath.
本句是典型 It is … that …
强调状语 under this cruel rule(在这条残酷律法之下);
去掉 It is … that 框架,
The merchant Egeon takes his breath under this cruel rule.
The merchant Egeon takes his breath under this cruel rule.
原句三
Any Syracusan who steps into Ephesus must pay a heavy fine or face the cold sentence of death.
先行词是 Any Syracusan(任何一名叙拉古人);
从句 who steps into Ephesus 用来限定“哪一类人”;
Any Syracusan must pay a heavy fine or face death sentence.
原句四
While Egeon awaited judgement, another story took its flight.
另一边寻亲的安提福勒斯进城;
Another story began while Egeon waited for judgement.
原句五
Every street held a new trap, every turn a fresh surprise.
还原:every turn held a fresh surprise;
Every street had a new trap and every turn brought surprise.
选文大量运用 It is … that 强调句型,
用来突出故事关键背景与转折;
多处出现 who / that 限制性定语从句,限定人物、地点与条件;
Until / While 引导的时间状语从句频繁穿插,控制叙事时序;
大量平行对偶短句、省略句交替搭配少量诗行长句;
开篇使用特殊疑问句设置悬念;
